A Leader in Reconciliation Studies
Brenda Salter McNeil, associate professor and director of reconciliation studies, appears on the cover of the October 2012 Christianity Today magazine as one of "50 Women to Watch: Those Most Shaping the Church and Culture." The article about her work in reconciliation is titled "Brenda Salter McNeil: Reconciler." "Her work," writes the author of the article, "has shaped the policies of Christian colleges, universities, and seminaries across the country and the world."

Environmental Research at SPU's Blakely Island Field Station
SPU has a fantastic wilderness environmental research campus in the San Juan Islands. At the Blakely Island Field Station, science students get to study lush kelp forests, eelgrass meadows, spectacular undersea rock walls, freshwater lakes, as well as the habitat for river otters, herons, kingfishers, bald eagles, and ospreys, and diverse fauna. Besides a great story, this is a photographer’s dream!

After almost 70 years of ownership and more than two decades of evaluating its best use, Seattle Pacific University is selling its Camp Casey Conference Center and the adjacent Fort Casey Inn on Whidbey Island to the YMCA of Snohomish County. The YMCA will take over operations of the 75-acre waterfront property near Fort Casey State Park outside of Coupeville beginning January 1, 2025.

The dedication of the Dr. Ken Tollefson Friendship Bench will be Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 11:30 a.m. near the Story Pole behind Alexander and Adelaide Hall on the Seattle Pacific University campus. The late Professor Emeritus of Anthropology Ken Tollefson spent his life committed to serving indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest and Alaska and mentoring colleagues and students. He was given full membership into the Tlingit, Snoqualmie, and Duwamish tribes in gratitude for his advocacy for the tribes’ federal recognition and protection of their aboriginal sites, including naming Snoqualmie Falls as a natural historic site.

SPU professor receives $1 million grant to study faith in families

Feb 16, 2023

Katherine Douglass, Seattle Pacific University associate professor of educational ministry and practical theology, received a $1 million grant from Lily Endowment Inc. as part of the Christian Parenting and Caregiving Initiative to study faith socialization in families. The grant will also bring together ministry leaders and parents for a trip to Hawaii to learn about the impact of disease, family, religion, and government within the former leper colony on Moloka’i. Douglass will be working with undergraduate and graduate students along with four SPU professors and staff in theology, psychology, and multi-ethnic programs.

Dr. Deana Porterfield, president of Roberts Wesleyan University and Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan University, was unanimously elected today by the Seattle Pacific University Board of Trustees as the university’s next president. Award-winning SPU professor presents latest research

For more than 15 years, SPU Professor of Biology Cara Wall-Scheffler has researched human locomotion, studying differences in how men and women walk, run, and carry loads. Her work has been published in numerous papers and covered in the media. She recently won a prestigious award for her research and mentorship of undergraduate students as well as a Fulbright Fellowship to continue her work in the Anthropology Department at Charles University in Prague. Wall-Scheffler will present her latest research examining how women’s “endurance mobility has shaped the evolution of our entire human species" at a public lecture Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2023, at 6 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons, Queen Anne Room.

Swanson Scientific Research Award from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust at a special ceremony on November 11. Seattle Pacific files lawsuit in support of religious freedom

Seattle Pacific University filed a lawsuit in federal court on July 27, 2022, to defend its right to hire Christian faculty and staff after Washington state’s Attorney General demanded the school’s internal communications and private employee information. Seattle Pacific has asked a federal district court to step in and protect its freedom to choose employees on the basis of religion, free from government interference or intimidation.

Seattle Pacific University President Daniel J. Martin announced today that he will resign his position effective April 5, 2021. Martin served as president for nine years, and is only the 10th president in SPU’s 130-year history. In an email statement to the SPU community, Martin said, “I have decided it is the right time to transition from my role as president of Seattle Pacific University. Following this resignation, I accepted an offer to serve in a leadership role at a healthcare foundation for a national health system. The nature of the role and the healthcare system’s expectations that I begin before the end of April will require me to transition prior to the conclusion of the academic year.”

SPU starts master planning process

Seattle Pacific University has commenced a master planning process with the city of Seattle. The Major Institution Master Plan (MIMP) will embody the University’s vision for growth over the next 20 years or more. The plan will contain development zoning standards designed to accommodate its growth and mitigate negative impacts of growth on the neighborhood. The process began with the University’s application and submittal of its Concept Plan in July 2020, outlining the University’s initial campus plan concept. It is intended to start a discussion regarding the preliminary draft master plan.

Seattle Pacific University lowers tuition by 25 percent

Beginning autumn 2021, Seattle Pacific University will reduce the undergraduate tuition rate by 25%, restructure scholarships, and cap future tuition rate increases in an effort to attract more students to the nationally ranked private institution. SPU waives ACT/SAT requirements for 2020 and 2021 applicants

Due to the difficulty of taking college entrance exams and meeting high school graduation requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic, Seattle Pacific University announced several changes to its regular application process for high school and transfer students. SPU is waiving the ACT and SAT requirements for undergraduate students seeking admission in autumn 2020, or winter, spring, or autumn 2021. These students will still receive full consideration for most merit scholarships.

Homeless Community Moves onto University Campus
