Vocational discernment
Vocational discernment is a process of clarifying one’s calling that involves guidance, self-reflection, and prayer. Students are encouraged to take time to understand their gifts and passions in order to find a vocational direction that will serve others and bring purpose and meaning to their life.
Here are three of the ways the CCC can help:
- Course: GS 2000/4000 “Finding Your Vocation.” This 2-credit seminary-style course, offered every quarter, will help you come to know yourself better and sense God’s call on your life. You will learn to use reflective writing and tools for discernment and prayer in your everyday life and for your future.
- Individual counseling appointments. Make an appointment to meet with our spiritual direction counselor or a career counselor to talk about your sense of purpose and direction. Schedule an appointment online from the “Career Services” tab on your Handshake account, in person at our front desk on the second floor of the Student Union Building, or by calling 206-281-2485.
- Career assessments. We offer several online tools that can help you assess your strengths, interests, values, personality type, and more.
- SPU Library Resources. Over 1600 items exploring the theological and practical application of the intersection of the Christian faith in the workplace can be found in the Work and Faith Collection available on the third floor of the library
Career exploration
Once you have a better understanding of yourself and your calling, the next step is career exploration. Learn how to research occupations, gain career insights by networking, and get experience that will help clarify your direction. Then develop an effective strategy to realize your goals.
