Professor of Theology Priscilla Pope-Levison has received a $40,000 grant from the Louisville Institute. The Institute funds sabbatical research projects that contribute to an enhanced understanding of important issues concerning Christian faith and life, pastoral leadership, and/or religious institutions.
Pope-Levison’s grant will fund her book project titled After the Altar Call: Women's Institution Building in the Progressive Era. She argues that the institution building of women evangelists -- churches and denominations, religious training schools, evangelistic organizations, and rescue homes and missions -- helped reshape American Christianity from itinerant to institutional revivalism in the Progressive Era.
