Professor of Music

In his 37 years at Seattle Pacific University, Wayne Johnson has served as chair of keyboard studies and taught piano and music literature as well as a number of general education courses. Wayne has appeared as piano soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician throughout the U.S., and in Canada, Europe, and South America. He has been featured several times on Seattle’s KING-FM radio, and from 1984 to 1990 was the pianist for Quartet Seattle, a chamber ensemble-in-residence at SPU. Wayne has recorded two CDs: “Music for Piano by Alan Hovhaness” and “Salon Classics from the Golden Age of the Piano.” 

Over the years, Wayne has been very active in the local, state, and national levels of the Music Teachers National Association as a recitalist, convention committee member, adjudicator, and presenter. He has written articles and reviews for the American Music Teacher Journal and other publications and given pre-concert lectures for the Seattle Symphony.

Wayne was born and raised in Kingsport, Tennessee. After retirement, Wayne and his wife, Claire, are returning to his roots to be near his relatives and to enjoy some Southern cuisine and a rural lifestyle.
