Alumni Medallion Award Recipient Joshua Van Eaton

Senior Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice Joshua Van Eaton will receive the Seattle Pacific University Medallion Award on Saturday, February 3, as part of SPU’s Homecoming weekend.

Van Eaton graduated from SPU in 1997. He is widely known for his work as the lead attorney on the 14-member team that negotiated a $17.4 billion settlement with Volkswagen after the Environmental Protection Agency found that the company was deliberately cheating greenhouse gas emissions tests with some of its diesel vehicles.

In honor of his work on this case, Van Eaton received the 2017 Federal Employee of the Year Award from the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals. Van Eaton and his team were commended by The New York Times editorial board for their work, and described them as “defenders of the faith in government.

The Medallion Award is given to alumni who have provided outstanding service to the university community and whose contributions have made a significant impact in a particular field of service.
