Register to participate in Commencement beginning Tuesday, March 4.
Registration is done through Banner:
- Log into Banner
- Choose “Student Menu”
- Choose "Graduation Menu"
- Choose "Graduation Events Sign-up”
If you do not register by Tuesday, May 31, we will assume you are not participating in Commencement.
Announcements and Class Rings
You may purchase graduation announcements and class rings from Balfour, which can later be picked up at the SPU Bookstore. In early March, expect an informational brochure from Balfour in your mailbox. If you do not receive the brochure, stop by the Bookstore for one.
Caps, Gowns, and Hoods
Order your cap, gown, and hood online beginning Tuesday, March 1. Payment for your cap, gown, and hood will occur at the time of pickup — your online order total will display as $0. Once ordered, you may pick up your cap, gown, and hood, beginning May 18, at the Bookstore. It's best to pick up your regalia as early as possible. Graduate hood colors are available here.
The deadline for ordering caps and gowns online is midnight on Wednesday, April 20.
If you do not order your regalia online by April 20, you must order it in person at the Bookstore in mid-May — on a first-come, first-serve basis. To avoid missing out, order early and order online!
If you forget to pick up your cap and/or gown, the Bookstore will be open, selling caps and gowns (but not hoods) before the Graduate Commencement ceremony begins.
If you have questions about caps, gowns, hoods, rings, and announcements, please stop by the Bookstore, or call them at 206-281-2137 (from a campus phone, dial x2137).
- As a graduate student, you will wear your tassel on the left side of your mortar board.
- Men will remove their caps for the invocation and leave them off until the conclusion of the Commencement address. Replace them prior to moving to the platform and remove them again for the benediction, replacing them for the recessional.
Summer 2016 Graduates
If you will be a 2016 Summer graduate, have already applied for graduation, and wish to have your name in the Graduate Commencement program and participate in the Graduate Commencement ceremony, you must register for Summer Session for all needed requirements no later than Friday, April 30.
Diplomas are not distributed during Commencement. Instead, you will receive yours once all requirements are completed, your grades have been posted for your degree, and all financial obligations to the University (e.g., fines, etc.) are met. During the ceremony, you’ll receive a diploma cover.
Spring Quarter graduates should receive diplomas by mid-September; summer graduates should receive diplomas by mid-December.
