2017 Undergraduate Commencement Details and Dates

 

Registering Online

Register to participate in Commencement beginning Friday,  March 3. 

Registration is done through Banner:

    • Log into Banner
    • Choose “Student Menu”
    • Choose "Graduation Menu"
    • Choose "Graduation Events Sign-up”
If you do not register by Tuesday, May 30, we will assume you are not participating in Commencement.

    Caps, Gowns, Announcements and Class Rings

    You may purchase caps, gowns, graduation announcements, and class rings from Herff-Jones all through one ordering website - a link will be included when ordering begins on January 17.  Payment for online orders will be required at checkout. 

    Online ordering will be closed on March 10. If you have completed your order by that time, your items will be available for pick up at the Grad Fair in Upper Gwinn on Tuesday, April 11 or at any time after that at the SPU bookstore.

    If you have not completed your order by March 10, you will have a chance to purchase your regalia as well as announcements at the Grad Fair, or in the bookstore after April 11.

    Orders for rings must be purchased by Friday, April 14 at the latest as there is an 8 week lead time for production.

    • As an undergraduate student, you will wear your tassel on the right side of your mortar board.
    • Men will remove their caps for the invocation and leave them off until the conclusion of the Commencement address. Replace them prior to moving to the platform and remove them again for the benediction, replacing them for the recessional. 

    Tickets

    Tickets are required for admission into Key Arena, both for guests (age 3 and up) and graduates. Once you have registered online, you may pick up your tickets at Student Academic Services (SAS) on the first floor of Demaray Hall. Your tickets will be available beginning Monday, April 10.

    • Students will be given 10 tickets. If you need more, request them when you register online.
    • You are responsible for distributing your tickets to your guests before Commencement. No one will be allowed into Key Arena without a ticket.
    • If you are away from campus and unable to pick up your tickets (e.g., you graduated Winter Quarter, are on a study abroad, etc.), email sasinfo@spu.edu and your tickets will be mailed to you.

    Summer 2017 Graduates

    If you will be a 2016 Summer graduate, have already applied for graduation, and wish to have your name in the Commencement program and participate in Commencement Exercises, you must register for Summer Session for all needed requirements no later than Monday, May 15th. 

    Diplomas

    Diplomas are not distributed during Commencement. Instead, you will receive yours once all requirements are completed, your grades have been posted for your degree, and all financial obligations to the University (e.g., fines, etc.) are met. During the ceremony, you’ll receive a diploma cover.

    Spring Quarter graduates should receive diplomas by mid-September; summer graduates should receive diplomas by mid-December.

    Photographing/Videotaping

    Photography: GradImages is the official photography company for Commencement. They will take a photograph of each graduate receiving their diploma, and you will get a proof in the mail shortly after the ceremony. You can contact the company at 1-800-628-4509, or by visiting gradimages.com.

    No other photographers are allowed on the arena floor or in any aisle in the stands.

    Videotaping: All High Ceremonies will be recorded for Live Streaming Purposes. You can watch live streams of Ivy Cutting, Graduate Commencement, and Undergraduate Commencement on our Live Streaming Page.

    Suites

    If your family members and guests would like to rent a private suite at Key Arena from which to view Commencement, with seating for 16 people and a private bathroom, as well as the option of ordering catering*, the cost is $400. Full payment is due at the time of reservation.

    If you would like more information on renting a suite, contact Steve Ransom at Key Arena by calling 206-428-6300 or emailing sransom@aegworldwide.com. All suites must be reserved and paid for by May 16. Please note that wrapped packages and balloons are not allowed inside Key Arena.

    Suites will be available when the Key Arena doors open at 1:45 p.m. and will remain open until one hour after Commencement is over. Cost includes two parking passes to the 1st Avenue North Garage. Suite entry is near the parking garage. Suites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations must be made by Thursday, June 11th.

    *All catering orders are charged separately and must be completed by June 8. Catering is managed by Levy Restaurants. No outside food or beverages are permitted in the private suites.
