Doug Strong, Dean of the School of Theology

School of Theology Faculty

Since its founding in 1891, Seattle Pacific University has equipped men and women to engage the culture with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The SPU School of Theology, which exists to serve this end, houses undergraduate programs, as well as graduate programs in its Seattle Pacific Seminary.

At both the undergraduate and the seminary level, faculty members will nourish your intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth. And they will help you master the critical skills and multicultural sensitivities needed to understand the Christian faith and translate it into practices that change the world.

The School of Theology embraces a threefold model of theological education that we call Academy, Abbey, and Apostolate. This interplay of critical scholarship, spiritual edification, and Christian service — all informed by our Wesleyan heritage that joins “knowledge and vital piety” as a means of changing the world — defines a vision that distinguishes SPU among theology schools and seminaries.

The SOT serves all SPU undergraduates through courses meeting the University Foundations requirements. These courses introduce students to the formative practices of Christian discipleship (UFDN 1000), the story of God told in Christian Scriptures (UFDN 2000/3001), and the distinctive doctrines of historic Christianity (UFDN 3100).

Theology Major

The School of Theology offers a Christian Theology major, which includes a set of core courses combined with concentrations in the following:

  • Christian Scripture
  • Christian Mission
  • Educational Ministry
  • Theological Studies

Theology Minors

The School of Theology also offer seven minors and an international certificate, all designed to enrich the Christian perspective of a student’s chosen major and strengthen the connection between one’s faith and one’s life in the workplace, home, church, and world. Minors include:

Admission to Majors or Minors

To qualify for a major in the School of Theology, students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in all previous college credits and have attained at least a B- grade in a University Foundations course.

Application to this program may be made through the Theology Major or Minor Application form (PDF). A student must complete the major or minor requirements in effect when the student is admitted to the major or minor.

Young Life and Youth for Christ Ministries
Students may combine the Youth Ministry minor with a supervised internship with Western Washington Young Life or Seattle Youth for Christ. Interns can serve as volunteers or, in some cases, in part-time paid positions. Students may work toward full-time placement after college as staff or as a volunteer leader with either organization.

For more information, contact the School of Theology at 206-281-2342 or theology@spu.edu.

International Service Certificate
This brief program for an International Service Certificate offers useful training for students who hope to live and work multiculturally as Christians, but who cannot take enough courses to earn a minor in Global and Urban Ministry.
