| This course targets the mainstream elementary classroom teacher who possesses little to no specialized ESL training to meet the challenges of teaching linguistically diverse students. It integrates the teaching of English within the content areas of the regular curriculum, utilizes a strong theoretical underpinning for practice, and draws upon a functional model of language, sociocultural theories of learning, and current research on second-language development. Teaching reading and writing skills can be integrated into a variety of learning activities across the curriculum, supplemented with programming and assessment formats and checklists. Using the premise that language learning is not a simple linear process, but instead involves the ongoing development skills for a range of purposes; the course sees this development as largely the result of the social contexts and interactions in which learning occurs, and focuses on the way teachers can 'scaffold' language and learning in the content areas. It utilizes a holistic approach that acknowledges the struggle for students learning a new language, while simultaneously developing subject knowledge in it, and values the challenge for teachers addressing these needs. |

| Explores the role grammar plays in helping English Language Learners improve their language skills. Begins from a more global perspective by exploring seven definitions of grammar and then moves to the differences between patterns and rules and why second-language learners benefit from instruction on both. Analyzes the reasons students need to understand the three dimensions of grammar - form, meaning, and use - and how viewing grammar as a dynamic and changing system helps students overcome many challenges. Finally, the course enables participants to discover why teaching grammar in a way that makes it personally meaningful to students brings the best results. |

Begins by exploring the value, design, and scoring of language assessments, and then investigates the importance of analyzing the results of a language measure. To help translate theory into practice, participants will also learn a teacher-friendly means for calculating item difficulty and review a checklist for evaluating a language measure. Enables participants to look through key concerns related to both the teaching and assessing of written language, describe possible formats for assessing written expression, and identify and critique scales that have been used to assess essays. Finally, the course concludes with an investigation of ways to conduct performance assessments, how computer-assisted language testing differs from traditional assessment, and guidelines for the ethical use of tests. |

| This course provides in-depth, integrated attention to the needs of students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds while helping educators teach literacy in an era of high accountability. The course helps educators address the needs of English learners in their classrooms, and today's culturally diverse student population, while also addressing new frameworks for reading and writing instruction, including a sociocultural perspective on teaching and learning and insights from the New Literacies. It is based on the assumption that "content literacy is integral to every discipline and special subject area, to the teachable moments that make less stellar ones tolerable, and, most important, to each student's motivation and engagement with learning." The course provides material and information backed by research, tested in real classrooms, and designed to help teachers apply what is useful to their own particular disciplines. The authors share-both new and from previous editions-were picked with respect for diversity in language, culture, and social environment. |
