EDCA 5132 Strategies for Building Home-School Partnerships-M (5 credits)

Develop an understanding of relevant research in the area of parent-teacher collaboration and increase awareness of partnering successful strategies. This course will guide participants in developing their own strategies to enhance parent participation in and support of the education process and in raising the academic achievement of students. Class not open to: Undergraduate level.

EDCA 5917 Multi-Dimensional Parent Coaching (6,8 credits)

Provides new insights into parent coaching using a unique systems approach developed by the Parent Coaching Institute. Examines the differences and similarities between coaching, counseling, mentoring and consulting models and shares the important differences in more effective parent coaches. Presents the principles of living systems and affirmative inquiry through the lens of applicability to parent coaching. Explores family and cultural systems affecting today's parents. Introduces the "Vital Five" (critical developmental needs for children and teens) and encourages parents to focus on important vital signs with their children. Equivalent: CEU 2134.

EDCN 5174 Coaching Parents to Appreciate the Wonder Within (6-8 credits)

Provides a framework of affirming principles and a compilation of practical strategies to help parents effectively support and enhance their children's school success. Recognizes the parental ability to focus on their own and their children's internal strengths. Examines three important areas for assisting parents within the current educational paradigm: the roles of parenting styles and children's behaviors; the usefulness of intrinsic motivation techniques to engage new levels of aliveness; capacity and creativity within the family; and key components for parents to become effective, appreciative advocates for their children. Uses the Parent Coaching Institute model as a basis for listening, communicating and encouraging parents to take action in the best interest of their children. Equivalent: CEU 2365.

Guides participants in rethinking and designing productive approaches to help parents understand the power they hold to effect positive change in the world. Offers innovative ideas and exciting strategies for helping families move from a culture of despair to one of hope and vision, and how teachers, counselors, parent educators, mentors and coaches can be involved. Examines current issues and future trends from textbooks along with tips, models and resources from the course notebook and other sources. Includes new methods for understanding the seminal role of literacy to further democratic principles. Describes ways for replacing family problem-solving practices with transformational processes. Nurtures skills and competencies for mastering the change process. Illustrates the power of using the monastic option and cultivating a small field. Aids in understanding of the adult life cycle and its impact on renewal and productivity. Equivalent: CEU 2420.

EDCT 5261 Inviting Family Partnership (2 credits)

This course explains why some parents are harder to reach than others and provides strategies that make it more likely that every parent will become a stronger partner. Also explores a teacher's unconscious reluctance to share the teaching role with moms and dads and provides strategies to improve leadership skills. Based on the Self Theory of Carol Dweck and the Invitational Schools model of W.W. Purkey, this course discusses why strong parent-teacher relationships are important but also why partnering with parents is more than just "parent involvement".
