CEU 0412 Kodaly Sampler (1.8-2.1 units)

Highlights the principles and practices taught in the Kodaly program. Gain an understanding of the musicianship skills developed in solfege classes and the choral techniques in conducting classes. For those that stay for the complete three-week course, switch to Level I for full credit.

EDCN 5648 Opera: Enriching the Classroom (3-4 credits)

Explores the cultural, political, philosophical and artistic milieu in which the opera was composed. Incorporates the creation of lesson plans appropriate to the classroom by having participants independently create proposals on how they will enrich their own classrooms. Participants will attend a final dress rehearsal of a Seattle Opera production. May be repeated for credit 5 times. Equivalents: CEU 2952, ENG 5000 and MUS 5039.

EDMU 5063 iPads in the Music Classroom (1 credit)

Designed to teach music teachers and middle/high school students how to successfully use and teach musical form, chord progression, music sequencing and song composition on an iPad. The course begins with the workings of the iPad, and quickly moves into musical form. Students will map out their form for their composition on paper, then learn and fill in their chord progession. Using Garage Band on the iPad, participants will take this blueprint and generate a five-part song consisting of: drums, bass, piano, guitar, and an audio track. They will then master the music and get it ready for publication and/or sharing online. Students must complete a final original song on their own and submit it to the instructor. Equivalent: CEU 3527.

EDMU 5593 Teaching Music Using Music Technology (2 credits)

The focus of this course is to show teachers how they can teach musical concepts using technology in their classrooms. Teachers will learn music form, chord progression techniques, and how to map out a song blueprint and take it to various music technology software's to produce a finished product. Shows music technology integration between various programs and brings participants up-to-date on the very latest softwares including: Sibelius 7(or Finale), Pro Tools 10, Band in a Box 2013, Garage Band, and using various iPad apps for teaching music. Equivalent: CEU 3555.

EDTE 5735 Digital Audio Recording Using Pro Tools (Beginner) (1-2 credits)

Designed for participants who are interested in digital audio recording, this course focuses primarily on Pro Tools software, microphones, patterns and placements, and some basics on the physics of sound. Pro Tools LE 7 software will be used for recording and editing. Midi recording, editing, importing and conversion to audio will also be addressed.

MUS 5040 Sibelius (2-3 credits)

Designed for both beginner and intermediate users or older Sibelius users wishing to learn the new Sibelius 7 version. Participants will learn the basics of inputting music using mouse or a midi keyboard in both step time and real-time modes. Simple in class assignments will teach participants to input a simple lead sheet with chords and lyrics, input a simple four-part score and transpose and extract the parts, learn how to scan in music, import midi files, design worksheets and tests, saving as audio, "live tempo", magnetic layout, working with sound libraries, working with the new Ideas HUB, advanced page layout techniques, writing music to video, and much more. May be repeated for credit 1 time. Equivalents: CEU 2879, MUS 5060 and MUS 5061.

Focuses on individual needs of the participant relating to a particular aspect of music technology via private one on one study. Studies basic and intermediate levels of music technology. Answers questions relating to specific music technology issues. Enables participants to move forward to an advanced level of study in music technology. Equivalent: CEU 2880.

Participants will receive daily instruction in basic conducting skills, rehearsal techniques and score reading. Most of the repertoire chosen will be suitable for use with children's choirs.
