Are you a musician with an interest in studying and developing your skills in music production? Music Production is a degree program that focuses on recording and production. Students are trained with the expertise necessary to function professionally on a national platform. Find the degree requirements here.

Through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and our new Nickerson Studios, as a student majoring in Music Production you will learn to record and edit audio, engineer live sound, as well as write music and create sound design for video games, film, TV and other media. Using MIDI and music notation software, you will integrate most aspects of music composition, arranging, and producing.

As a music major, you will apply your musicianship in the recording studio, the concert hall, and live church settings. Through internships, you will have access to prominent studios and live venues in the Seattle area. This area is recognized as one of the top regions for film and gaming industry, as well as an active community of live music and worship productions. Our alumni have jobs and are active in the music production industry.

Major Courses and Degree Requirements

SPU’s music program is accredited at the state and national levels. Each component of the program is designed to sharpen your skills, develop your competence and character, and prepare you for a future in music production.

As a Music Production major, you will engage in an integrative approach to musicianship. You will take classes in notation, sequencing, recording, and post-production. Music Production students gain valuable experience in applying their knowledge with hands-on opportunities to support the Music Department and University campus through recitals, worship, and student-led events.

The minimum total quarter credits required for a major emphasis is 124. The minimum total quarter credits required for degree is 180.

Entering the Major

You may enter the major during your first quarter at SPU. Entrance after your first quarter requires only good academic standing (2.0 or higher SPU cumulative GPA). Consult the Undergraduate Catalog for complete information on how and when to enter and what you must do to complete the program.
