Insights From Peter Drucker: Blending Faith and the Practice of Management

SPU’s Center for Integrity in Business (part of SBGE) hosted a special one-day workshop last October 17 in conjunction with the Christian Business Faculty Association's annual conference at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.

In light of the pressing societal problems that business must help solve, "Management as a Liberal Art: Insights From Peter Drucker, Our Christian Faith, and the Practice of Management” explored the proposition that the world needs more than technical experts in business; we need leaders who can think across disciplines and lead people with integrity.

Presentations were given by Bill Pollard (former chair and CEO of ServiceMaster, via video) and Joseph Maciariello (leading Drucker scholar and professor of management at Claremont Graduate University). In addition, Gloria Nelund (chair and CEO of TriLinc Global), Shundrawn Thomas (managing director for Northern Trust Global Investments), and Steve Tourek (senior vice president and general counsel at Marvin Windows and Doors) presented practical applications for business.

Video clips from an interview with Bill Pollard are posted on CIB’s YouTube channel.

In addition to CIB’s behind-the-scenes work in organizing the Drucker workshop, SBGE was well-represented during the event with Al Erisman, Gerhard Steinke, and John Terrill in up-front leadership roles. Steinke posted blogs from the event, including “Thoughts on Leadership,” “Management and Employees à la Peter Drucker,” and “Competence, Character, Leadership, and Information Systems.”
