A Century of Physical Education at SPU

Seattle Pacific first added courses in physical education in 1914, recommending that “courses consist of classes in both theory and practice.” Courses in tennis and basketball for all students soon began.

By 1915, Seattle Pacific had doubled its number of tennis courts, which were then located behind Alexander Hall. Because the earliest gymnasium had yet to be built, outdoor basketball, baseball, and tennis were popular during the Autumn and Spring quarters — with spring tennis matches becoming one of the highlights of the program.
