Who Should Pursue This Degree
If you have administrative or managerial responsibilities in a Christian organization (e.g., church, parachurch ministry, nonprofit organization), or you work in the business/corporate world and desire to live a more integrated life of faith in the workplace, this degree is intended for you.
The Master of Arts in Business and Applied Theology allows you to focus on traditional theological disciplines while at the same time integrating recent insights and methods from the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, education, psychology, business, and economics. Our goal is that you will be able to apply what you learn in each field of study to the pressing needs of the contemporary church and the postmodern world.
As an MA-BAT student, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and multicultural sensitivities you need to understand the Christian faith and put it into faithful and effective practice in a hurting world. You will also experience rich opportunities for worship, fellowship, and personal spiritual growth in the context of SPU’s evangelical Wesleyan heritage.
The MA degree core curriculum of 39 credits consists of three two-credit “intensives” — introductory courses in spiritual formation and mission — and three courses each in Bible, church history, and theology/ethics.
Of the remaining credits required for the degree, 24 credits are taken in the SPU School of Business and Economics. Of the remaining courses, 12 are in a prescribed suite of courses in business ethics and social responsibility, and 12 in your choice of business management courses (e.g., finance, accounting, operations, legal environment, and information systems). The other 15 credits include a 3-credit theology and business integration seminar, a 6-credit internship, and two 3-credit theology electives.
The “capstone” of the program is a 3-credit seminar integrating theology and business.
This MA degree can also be combined with the MBA degree offered by the School of Business and Economics.
