While living in World War II forced labor camps, a young Jewish girl, Sala Garncarz, received more than 300 letters from family and friends. Fifty years after her release, Sala shared the letters and story of survival with her family. Those letters inspired her daughter, Ann Kirschner, to write a book called Sala’s Gift: My Mother’s Holocaust Story, which inspired a play, Letters to Sala, by Arlene Hutton. The Northwest premiere of the newly finished work takes place at SPU.
In conjunction with the play, a traveling exhibition of letters, photographs, and documents from the Sala Garncarz Kirschner Collection will be displayed in Kreider Gallery in SPU's McKinley Hall during the month of April. Following the April 19 performance of Letters to Sala, playwright Arlene Hutton and book author Ann Kirschner will discuss the play and answer questions from the audience.
