Internet access is broadly available, and SPU offers access to many resources from off-campus locations. Access to SPU email is available via a client or a web browser (see Email section); many other resources such as Banner, Blackboard, and SPU-Web are available via an Internet browser.

Authorized faculty and staff may access protected resources (e.g., the My Documents folder on their office computer, departmental file shares, Internet Native Banner, etc.) via a secure virtual private network (VPN) connection.

Due to the nature of Internet threats, access to SPU resources from off campus is restricted to those technologies and applications controlled or authorized by CIS. It is a violation of University policy to circumvent ingress controls via any technology, or to run public-facing servers or web sites without express written permission from CIS. Additional restrictions are set forth in the University's Acceptable Use Policy.

How To:

Connect to SPU Resources from Off-Campus
To connect to general access resources web from off-campus you must go through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and have a network-capable computer. Then it is a simple matter of launching a web browser and going to the appropriate URL.

Connecting via Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Access to protected resources via the VPN is controlled and managed by CIS. VPN users are expected to complete special security awareness training, to maintain system and device health, and to carefully protect privileged access credentials. VPN training is gladly provided by CIS in a group or personalized basis. Interested employees should contact the CIS HelpDesk for further details.

Common Problems:
The VPN does not work for all prospective users. Some ISPs block or rate-limit encrypted traffic. If your ISP does not support SPU's VPN deployment, the only choices are to change service providers or (if offered) upgrade your residence to a business class of service.
