Ministries

"The eight ministries at SPU strive to provide a holistic experience for the student body at each of their events."

Vice President of Ministries

Scott Jackson

ASSP-VPM@spu.edu

Hometown: Bothell, WA

Major: Global Development Studies

What do you love most about SPU ministries?

Definitely the people and the community our ministries create. I remember my very first day at SPU, my SMC took me to the grocery store with a couple of his friends. It was a small act, but it made me feel immediately welcomed. Since then I have met so many friends through the ministries and have been blessed to be in a community that is tremendously fun, truly caring and has deepened my relationship with God.

Sharpen Coordinator

John Miller

Hometown: Military Kid

Major: Theology, Scriptures emphasis

What do you love most about your ministry?

My favorite thing about Sharpen is that we want nothing more than to love people. We want to provide community and support to anyone who wants it. Some commuter students are lonely. We hate that. While we can't pretend to be the answer, we will do all we can because we believe that life is better together.

Campus Student Ministry Coordinator

David Dovgopolyy

Hometown: Everett, Washington

Major: English Literature and History

What do you love most about your ministry?

One of the things I love most about the SMC program is that it makes SPU a unique school where students can openly have conversations about how God is involved and interested in the mundane, day-to-day details of their lives.

Campus Student Ministry Coordinator

Rachel Hurley

Hometown: Santa Cruz, California

Major: Psychology

What do you love most about your ministry?

What I love most about the SMC program is the way it creates community! It creates community on each resident floor and it creates a community amongst the ministry leaders within the program. The program sets up a way for everyone to be known and to know others deeply. In this community we encourage each other to grow in the Lord daily and to become more of who He created us to be.

SPRINT Coordinator

Bryan Hildebrandt

Hometown: Wichita, Kansas

Major: Appropriate and Sustainable Energy in General Engineering

What do you love most about your ministry?

What truly gives me joy is to know that the growth experienced for students who go on SPRINT trips does not end after they return from their time overseas. Though their time in country is short, each student is able to embrace their host country’s culture through amazing experiences and relations that they then bring back to our campus. Students find meaning and purpose from their trip to then share and integrate into their life and daily interactions, allowing for real collective transformation.

Catalyst Ministry Programmer

Zyra Layaoen

Hometown: Business Administration: Social Enterprise concentration

Major: Appropriate and Sustainable Energy in General Engineering

What do you love most about your ministry?

I love how much Ministries at SPU are student led. The campus ministry teams are filled with talented and diverse students that allow for different cultures to be expressed. It is clear that SPU is intentional about diversity and that is a highlight for me. All of the people involved with campus ministries glow with purpose and love from God and it’s so awesome. It has been a blessing to be surrounded by great people with so much passion.

Ministry Marketer

Andrew Wolff

Hometown: Bridgewater, Vt

Major: Visual Communication

What do you love most about your ministry?

I love how SPU ministries create a place for students to encounter Jesus and follow Him in community through worship, discipleship, and service. The ministries provide a unique opportunity for students to be a part of what God is doing on the SPU campus and throughout Seattle in an intentional community seeking to follow Jesus.

Relinquish Coordinator

Katherine Woo

Hometown: Monroe, WA

Major: Biology

What do you love most about your ministry?

What I love about Relinquish is every event feels like a breath of air. I'll go to events like Grow and Heartbeat, and let every stressful thought fade away as my eyes just turn towards Jesus. From that moment a prayer would be breathed, maybe one of thanksgiving, a desperate prayer or just sitting in the moment. Usually we would take a moment to pray for each other. I received so much encouragement, and often found a lot of the prayers I received in that space was exactly what I needed to hear.

group Coordinator

Nolan Kurtz

Hometown: Tacoma, WA

Major: Christian Theology - double emphasis in Christian mission and theological studies

What do you love most about your ministry?

group had a huge impact on me my freshman year at SPU because the services taught me how narrow my understanding of God actually was, and in turn gave me a fascination for Christian theology. My favorite part about group is providing a safe place for students to explore the mystery of God and to seek what it means to follow Jesus no matter where they’re at in their spiritual journey.

gather Coordinator

Jenny Kim

Hometown: Mercer Island, Washington

Major: Political Science

What do you love most about your ministry?

I love working in a team of people who are passionate and dedicated to creating a space of community worship.

Urban Involvement Coordinator

Ben Goebel

Hometown: Boise, Idaho

Major: Global Development Studies

What do you love most about your ministry?

My favorite part about working with Urban Involvement is seeing students have their preconceived notions broken down about those that they once believed to be different from themselves.

Latreia Coordinator

Michaela Orzechowski (Mc-Kell-Ahh Or-Za-Husky)

Hometown: Michaela Orzechowski (Mc-Kell-Ahh Or-Za-Husky)

Major: Exercise Science and Applied Human Biology

What do you love most about your ministry?

I love the accessibility to serve through Latreia. Sometime it's easy to get caught up in assignments, tests, work, etc. but Latreia allows students to take a break between everything and to simply serve.

School of Theology Senator

Laura Nile

Hometown: Salem, OR

Major: Christian Scriptures

What do you love most about your ministry?

I love our holistic approach to ministries at SPU. I think we really understand that we can't do service without discipleship, discipleship without worship, and worship without service. Our ministries are uniquely interconnected, which helps us to serve God and serve others to the best of our abilities.
