Teacher of the Year Award: SOE
This quarter, F@C will feature the nine nominees for the SPU Faculty Teacher of the Year award. The Faculty Development Committee will announce SPU’s Teacher of the Year at the June 3 Faculty In-Service.
Dr. David Denton, Assistant Professor of Graduate Teacher Education, has taught courses including History of American Education, Integration of Technology for Elementary & Secondary Teachers, and Introduction to Teaching. Dr. Denton believes in "distributing [his] activity between teaching, scholarship, and service" and understands education as both an artistic and scientific endeavor. He resonates with having a gift for teaching, "not because [he] is a master teacher, but because [he] has a passion for it" and feels joy when he teaches. In response to his Integration of Technology for Elementary & Secondary Teachers course, one student said, "I appreciated that the class started each week with focusing our attention on Christ and remembering that through all of this, God's got our back and we'll make it through. It was always a good, weekly reminder to know we're going to be ok." The committee members who observed Dr. Denton's teaching as part of the review process were impressed with his incorporation of faith in the classroom and the variety of learning techniques utilized.
