Why Do I Need A Meal Plan?

In keeping with Seattle Pacific University’s commitment to building community, all students living in Ashton, Hill, Emerson and Moyer Halls are required to choose from one of five “metal” meal plans (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Copper and Bronze). We recognize that student schedules and dining preferences vary, therefore we have developed these plans to provide flexibility and convenience. Each plan allows students unlimited access to the main dining hall during different times of the day, along with SPU Points to spend at any of the dining locations.

Which Meal Plan Is Best For Me?
You choose the right plan based on your needs. For example, a student who rarely eats breakfast may want the Gold Plan, which allows access to Crossroads from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. With 10,000 ($100) SPU Points to spend, the student may choose to occasionally pick up a roll and coffee at Academic Perks, instead of a daily breakfast. For complete plan details, see the SPU Campus Dining Chart.

How Do I Use My “Points”?
SPU Points
The five metal meal plans come with SPU Points, which are worth a penny a point at any dining location and save you sales tax. For example, let’s say you have a Platinum Plan, which includes 7500 points ($75). You want to purchase chicken quesadillas at Falcon’s Landing for $3.99. The cashier will deduct 399 points from your balance, leaving you with 7101 points ($71.01) to use the remainder of the quarter. Or, if you wanted to bring a friend to Gwinn, you can enter using your metal meal plan and the cashier will deduct points worth the cash price for a meal for your friend, but without charging the sales tax you’d pay if you use cash.

As each plan increases the time you can access Crossroads, the SPU points provided decrease. That is, the more access you have to Crossroads, the fewer points you’ll need to supplement your meal plan. Unused SPU Points will roll from quarter to quarter but not year to year. Additional points can be purchased as needed.

Advantage Points
Advantage Points are used in the same manner as SPU Points but are not linked to a metal meal plan. Unused Advantage Points will roll from quarter to quarter and year to year. Additional points may be purchased throughout the quarter as desired.

What Are Block Plans?
Block Plans are available for students living in campus apartments or commuters. You may choose to purchase a Block 25 (25 entrances into Gwinn) or a Block 50 (50 entrances into Gwinn). Block plans may be used during any time Gwinn is open.

Unused Blocks will carry from quarter to quarter and from year to year. If no activity is recorded on an account for three consecutive quarters, any remaining Blocks will be forfeited.

What If I Have A Scheduling Conflict Or Am Sick?
If you have a schedule conflict with your meal plan, including class, work or an athletic program you may sign up for a sack lunch with the cashier in Gwinn. Sack lunches are available beginning the second week of each quarter, and end the last day of classes for the quarter. Sack lunches are not available during finals’ week, or on holidays.

If you are ill and confined to your room, a friend may bring you a meal from Crossroads at Gwinn Commons. Be sure to send your campus ID card with your friend to receive the meal.
