3. SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR ENGLISH MAJORS

Oxford Summer Programme (OSP)

An annual summer program at Wycliffe Hall for undergraduates enrolled at member institutions of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (including SPU).

Oxford Study Abroad Programme (OSAP)

An annual 4-6 week summer program offering traditional one-on-one tutorials at various Oxford colleges.

Summer Programme in English Literature, Oxford

The regular summer program of Oxford University, at Exeter College.

English Literature Summer School, Cambridge

One of the international summer programs of Cambridge University. Others feature Medieval Studies, Shakespeare, etc.

C. S. Lewis Summer Institute

The triennial conference of the C. S. Lewis Foundation at Oxford and Cambridge. The Foundation also sponsors annual summer seminars at Lewis's home, the Kilns (lovingly restored by SPU's own Don Yanik).

Prague Summer Program

Writing workshops with big name American and Central European writers in Prague. Credit offered through Western Michigan University.

Summer Literary Seminars (SLS)

Writing workshops with American writers in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Mombasa, Kenya. Limited to 15 students.

Bread Loaf Writers' Conference

The nation's oldest writers' conference at Middlebury College in Vermont.

Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets

An annual summer seminar for undergraduate poets at the Stadler Center for Poetry, Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

Information about the exam required for admission to many graduate schools.

Associated Writing Programs (AWP)

A site full of useful information about MFA programs in creative writing, conferences, contests, etc.

A ranking of graduate programs in English and other disciplines by the National Research Council.

5. STUDY ABROAD

Critical Language Scholarships

Federal scholarships for intensive summer study of languages identitied as "critical" by the US State Department (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, etc.). Overseas sites provided by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers.

Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Oxford

A year-long honors program at Keble College for high-achieving undergraduates from CCCU institutions, including SPU.

Oxford Study Abroad Programme (OSAP)

Regular academic terms for Associate Students at various Oxford colleges.

Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)

Opportunities to study abroad for U.S. undergraduates.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

Scholarships for U.S. undergraduates and recent graduates who wish to study overseas.

Fulbright Fellows Program

Fellowships for U.S. college graduates who wish to teach English or conduct research in Europe, Korea, or Turkey.

British Marshall Fellowships

Up to 40 fellowships annually for graduate study at a British university.

Davies-Jackson Scholarship

An annual scholarship for graduates of selected U.S. colleges (including SPU) to St. John's College, Cambridge for two years of study leading to a British B.A. (Limited to those who are the first in their families to graduate from college.)

6. TEACHING ENGLISH OVERSEAS

Peace Corps

Over 2,000 U.S. college graduates entered the Peace Corps in the year 2000; nearly 7,500 volunteers are currently serving overseas or in training, the majority in education. (Note that the Corps recommends that undergraduates study a foreign language in college, preferably French or Spanish.)

Fulbright Fellows Program

Fellowships for U.S. college graduates who wish to teach English or conduct research in Europe, Korea, or Turkey.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET)

Salaried one- and two-year English language teaching positions at Japanese schools for U.S. college graduates, sponsored by the Japanese government.

Lithuania Christian College

A new college looking for English teachers. Summer and full-year positions available for qualified graduates with a BA in English.

Amity Teachers Program

One and two-year English language teaching positions in China for college graduates, sponsored by the Amity Foundation, a non-governmental Chinese Christian organization.

English Language Institute (ELIC)

Summer and one-year English language teaching experiences in Asia for Christian college students, including the China Teaching Fellowship program for college graduates.

China Teaching Program (CTP)

One-year English language teaching positions in Chinese schools for college graduates, sponsored by Western Washington University (tuition required).
