Position: Professor and Director of Family and Consumer Sciences
Courses taught: Introduction to Family and Consumer Sciences, Individual and Family Development, Work and Family, Textiles.
Research interests: FCS history, FCS trends, sustainability and consumer choices, multiracial identity development
Experience: Dr. Kato joined the SPU faculty in 1986 and has chaired the FCS department since 2004.
Professional memberships: American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, International Federation of Home Economics, Washington Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
On a lighter note: I am passionate about the mission of FCS. That is, to empower people to improve their quality of life through food, clothing, shelter, and relationships. I am married to Dean Kato and have a son, Alex, and a daughter, Stefanie. Together we love to travel, especially to learn about cultures different than our own (especially through food!) But mostly, I love to hear people’s personal stories about their families and communities.
