Family and Consumer Sciences is an applied field of study in that it offers solutions to problems faced by individuals, families and communities.  Its programs focus on the welfare of individuals and families through enhancement of human potential concerning effective decision-making.

The purpose of Family & Consumer Sciences is to prepare students to work with people as scientists, designers, counselors, leaders, educators, and marketers in the apparel, interiors, and food and nutrition fields. Through a broad base of courses and an in-depth area of specialization, students are prepared to ultimately affect the quality of people's lives.

 

 

 

Mission Statement


The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences is to prepare students to engage the culture and offer solutions to problems faced by families and communities in their near environment.

This discipline enables creative adaptation to technological, social, economic, political and cultural changes throughout the life cycle within a Christian perspective.

Specializations within Family & Consumer Sciences provide knowledge which focuses on the family ecosystem and on the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, as these needs are provided within the household or by business, industry or public and private agencies / organizations in the delivery of goods, services or educational programs to consumers.

The department provides an environment that nurtures the integration of Christian scholar / servants. This discipline strives to support and fulfill the mission of the institution.

The department is housed in Peterson Hall with up-to-date laboratories for textile testing, pattern drafting, garment construction, food chemistry, sensory evaluation and product evaluation. The program and resources are recognized for their excellence in the state, in the Christian college consortium, and in the nation. A dedicated faculty are professionally involved in the state and national organizations and known for teaching excellence and contribution of new knowledge through research.

The Family & Consumer Sciences program is the only comprehensive Christian program in the Pacific Northwest which enjoys liaisons with the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Interior Design) in Los Angeles. Our four-year program is located in an urban setting which provides exciting opportunities for internships that expand career options for men and women.

Opportunities for Careers

Graduates have the ability to apply their knowledge within the specialized areas of food, clothing and shelter. They are knowledgeable in family resource management and consumer decision-making. Several of the major take course work in economics, marketing, statistics, accounting, and personal management; therefore, understanding the dynamics of business and the importance of profit. Graduates have a high potential for being effective managers and executives with their knowledge of human development and resource management in relation to food, clothing, shelter anda quality of life in a diverse environments. Graduates learn to understand the uniqueness of the quality of family life in society and can better balance a career and home life.

Graduates in home and family life elementary / secondary education are highly valued and the job placement rate is about 80% of Seattle Pacific University with almost 100% for Family & Consumer Sciences majors who seek these jobs. Graduates are well qualified for graduate work.
