Praxis Nursing: Spring 2014

A Word From Dean Lorie Wild

Dean Lorie Wild

The rich history of SPU nursing came to life at our recent Alumni Coffee. Seeing graduates from 1968 to 2013 showed the difference they make in the lives of others near and far. Even more exciting is an opportunity to continue to launch exceptional graduates and extend the reach of SPU nursing. We have received a $20,000 challenge gift from a generous supporter of SPU nursing. The donor, who wishes to be anonymous, will match any gift directed to SHS during 2014 to a total of $20,000. What a wonderful way to double your gift in support of quality nursing education!

To best steward this gift, we have identified two priority areas for funding: the Nursing Skills Lab and the Dean’s Giving Circle.

We were able to increase the size of this year’s entering pre-licensure class from 50 to 64 students ― a 28 percent increase! To facilitate their hands-on learning in the best way possible, we are working to increase the number and variety of mannequins and other practice models in the Skills Lab. Students appreciate the opportunity to practice IV and urinary catheter insertion, wound management, and other technical skills in the safety of the Skills Lab. Your gift will help them succeed in developing those skills!

The Dean’s Giving Circle supports faculty development and other strategic initiatives, including the Grow Our Own program. Grow Our Own provides forgivable loans to SHS faculty pursuing a doctorate. Eligible faculty can receive up to $8,000 per year to support their education. In return, they agree to continue their work at SPU following completion of their doctorate — one year of service for each year of funding. Grow Our Own is a win-win — faculty receive crucial financial support, and SHS reaps the benefits of retaining these gifted, doctorally prepared professionals to teach the next generation. You can read more about the difference this program is making in this e-newsletter.

Please consider joining us to meet the $20,000 challenge. Gifts at any level will help us achieve our goal and, most important, to support our amazing students and faculty!
