Computational Mathematics

NOTE: Substantial changes have recently been made to the mathematics curriculum.  The table below shows the new Computational Mathematics degree requirements which will apply to all students who entered SPU in the Fall of 2008 or later.  The old degree requirements will continue to apply for most students who entered SPU before Fall 2008.

B.S. in Computational Mathematics
The bachelor of science degree in computational mathematics is an interdisciplinary major designed for students interested in careers involving the applications of mathematics and computer science.  The major emphasizes applied mathematics, mathematical modeling, and programming.  A total of 48 credits in mathematics, 15 credits in physics, and 39 credits in computer science are required for the major.  A minimum of 48 upper division credits in math and computer science are required.  A GPA of 2.5 must be maintained for all courses in the major.

Admission to the Major
A student interested in majoring in computational mathematics needs to have a GPA of 2.5 or above in 15 credits of courses which apply to the major and must submit a major application form to a member of the mathematics faculty.

Some courses are only offered every other year, so good planning is recommended. Take a look at the Sample Schedule to see how a typical computational mathematics major might plan her/his course of study, or look at the Course Schedule page to see which mathematics courses are offered which years.  Consult the Computer Science Department for further information about the scheduling of CSC courses.
