Re: Global Education Initiative

Date: January 2, 2008

As you know, President Eaton has asked that I take the lead on the Global Education Initiative. I am pleased to do so and very pleased with Phil’s leading us in this direction and desire to be more intentional in our global education efforts. I am also grateful to each of you who through your teaching and scholarship is addressing these concerns and leading us in understanding the issues.

Phil’s memo to the faculty included a charge to provide “congruence, identity, vision, clarity and order to our global education efforts.” It is also essential that we have clear learning outcomes to guide programmatic and curricular development.

Our work will also be important as we respond to the NWCCU accreditation recommendation on study abroad programs.

In order to move ahead, I would like to invite all interested faculty to a meeting to discuss the initiative and to provide input on both process and program. It is always a challenge to find a time to meet as a faculty so if you are unable to attend this forum I encourage you to email me stating your interest and ideas.

The forum will be Thursday, January 10 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn.   And yes, goodies will be served!

I will be working with Faculty Council as we compose a task force to lead this effort and to provide overall direction for the initiative. We will also seek broad and continuous input from you all as we move toward  the goal of a report to President Eaton by June 1, 2008.
