A Worthwhile Journey

 

This past year, my wife and I racked up many frequent flyer miles. As is true for many of us, our focus was on getting to our destination -- not the journey. During one trip, we missed our flight back to Seattle by a matter of a few minutes. This meant that we needed to reroute our flight through Oakland International Airport -- and we needed to spend the night in the airport.

Want your student to find a job after graduation? So do we! The Center for Career and Calling, is hosting Senior Week, a series of workshops featuring guest professionals who will share tips and insights to prepare students for life after graduation. Encourage your student to attend this valuable series of free workshops. Students who attend at least three of the events will receive a free leather portfolio donated by the SPU Alumni Association.

Some of the workshops include:

  • How to Rock Your Next Interview; Daniel Hallak, professional development specialist

Please note that the FAFSA will be available to complete at fafsa.gov on January 1. It is to your student’s benefit to file as early as possible; continuing students must file by June 1 to meet the priority deadline. Also note that the IRS data retrieval will be available on February 3.

 
newsletter   Two New Finance-Focused Student E-Newsletters


Check out two new student e-newsletters from Student Financial Services and the Office of Student Employment. Money Matters (PDF) provides great information and resources on financing your student’s education. The NOSE (PDF) is geared toward student workers and students interested in working on campus.

 
writing   2012 Education Tax Credits


The tax year 2012 1098-T (Tuition Payments Statement) tax form for education tax benefits will be mailed to students’ permanent addresses at the end of January. Included with the 1098-T will be a letter explaining the American Opportunity Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Credit. You may need this information for your taxes this year.

Note that charges and aid applied in December will be reported on the 2012 1098-T form. Financial aid for Winter Quarter will begin appearing on student accounts on December 24. Consider making a payment in December for tax purposes.

campus   Grades Ready on December 17


Autumn Quarter grades will be posted to students' records by 9 p.m. on Monday, December 17. Students who receive Dean’s List honors will have their names posted to the online list by February 1. Press releases are sent to students’ hometown papers later in Winter Quarter to publicize the Dean’s List honor.

SPU's Homecoming celebration welcomes to campus alumni, students, parents, and families for a time of shared community.

Check the Homecoming 2013 schedule for a complete list of activities.

Suggested events for parents include:

  • Falcon men's basketball game (January 24, 7 p.m.), the Student Talent Show (January 25, 7 p.m.)
  • Homecoming Luncheon (January 26, 11:30 a.m.)
  • Falcon men's basketball game vs. Saint Martin's (January 26, 7 p.m.)
  • SPU Theatre Department's production of Bach at Leipzig (January 24–26, 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. performance on January 26)

There are several opportunities to meet President Daniel Martin during this special Inaugural Year. A reception follows the Homecoming Luncheon, as well as the men’s basketball game.
