Arab Spring or Arab Winter? Hope for Democracy
As the news reports of Arab "spring" quickly turn to reports of "winter," the media often neglects the voices of everyday women and artists who are continually resisting and seeking democratic change. We hear about the Shiite and Sunni, Islam and women, democratic turmoil, and refugee trauma, but are we missing pieces? Khawla Hadi, a translator for Iraqi-Syrian refugees at the trauma center at Lutheran Community Services Northwest, and Marwa al-Mtowaq, an Iraqi-American activist poet recently returned from Baghdad, will join SPU’s Professor of English Kimberly Segall, author of Performing Democracy in Iraq and South Africa, in a panel discussion. They will explore the origins of sectarian divide and narrate alternative histories on Monday, May 19, 7 p.m., in Upper Gwinn Commons on the campus of Seattle Pacific University. |
