Prayer: No Greater Honor

By Patti Heindel, Parent Prayer Network coordinator

Prayer has been a hallmark at Seattle Pacific throughout its history, and there have always been parents praying for their students. There is no greater honor than joining with all who pray for SPU and asking the Lord to undergird, surround, protect, guide, and direct those who lead and attend here.

Each month I send an email inviting prayer requests, and I take those requests and craft a list of prayer points with corresponding Scriptures. The list is emailed to more than 300 parents, and serves as a guide to spur prayer for the school. Most of the parents who receive the prayer guide live a great distance from SPU, so it is a way they can be more connected with their students and participate in their lives from afar.

The Parent Prayer Network also has prayer meetings on campus. There is always a gathering before big events such as Homecoming and Parents Weekend, which are always well attended and well received, and a wonderful time of getting to know other parents. The additional prayer meetings that are held on campus — approximately once a month — are naturally smaller, but Jesus said “where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst,” (Matt. 18:20) so it is always worth the one-hour investment!

We have a common bond as parents, desiring the success and well-being of our students. So often distance keeps us detached, but the Parent Prayer Network is one small way to help us stay connected to our children and the university they attend. More importantly, our prayers have more of an impact than we realize. Being able to partner with God, who has a great plan for our children and for SPU, is a believing parent’s highest privilege. Because God is so good, and his love so beyond our comprehension, he takes our prayers and “is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine!” (Eph. 3:20).
