Message From President Dan Martin

Allie CuttingOn June 13 and 14, I had the privilege of participating with Seattle Pacific University’s Class of 2014 in the annual Ivy Cutting and Commencement ceremonies. This is always a significant time for graduates and families, but I think this year was special. After the tragedy on campus in early June, we wanted more than ever to come together and celebrate our remarkable students, their academic achievements, their faith and strength of character, and their dreams for the future.

I had the opportunity to get to know many of our graduating students personally, and I was thrilled to see them achieve their goal of earning an SPU diploma. The entire SPU community shared in the joy ― including the faculty who taught and mentored these graduates, the staff who guided them, the friends and classmates who supported them, and, of course, the family members who helped make it all possible.

Visit our Class of 2014 website to see, among other things, a photo gallery from this year’s graduation celebrations and a link to the Undergraduate Commencement address by Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund. Maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of the celebration that is in store when your student becomes an SPU graduate.

The Seattle Pacific graduates of 2014 are highly competent young people who want to use their education to serve others, and I am so proud of them. I am also confident that they will care for the world in the same way they cared for one another throughout their time at SPU.

Thank you for all the ways in which you support your student, and for all the ways in which you support Seattle Pacific University. I have never been more grateful for this special place and its people, including you. I look forward to seeing you on campus when school opens in the fall!
