Where in the world are those SPU students?

Study Abroad

Combining study and travel in a big way, 78 graduate and undergraduate SPU students were in 11 countries around the world this summer.

“The opportunity to learn about art in a foreign country is the most valuable part,” explained one student who went on the Rome Art and Incarnation study trip led by Katie Kresser, associate professor of art history, and Jennifer Maier, professor of English. “Learning about another culture while in it broadens the mind and challenges your way of thinking.”

With numerous financial aid resources available, more and more students and their families are finding a study abroad trip a great addition to their students’ education. “Families should plan ahead, research their options, and apply for scholarships,” advises Gail De Bell, director of SPU’s Global Education: Study Abroad. “Studying abroad can be an affordable reality for nearly every student, and by talking with their academic counselor and planning carefully, students will still graduate on time.”

Adds Cassie Sanchez, program manager and advisor for SPU’s Study Abroad department: “This fall, we’ll send out a total of 98 students to 23 different countries. We love to see the unique destinations our students choose as their learning environment and temporary home.”

During the 2015–16 academic year, just a few study abroad locations include South Korea, Japan, Austria, Argentina, South Africa, Guatemala, and Madagascar. Participating in both SPU programs and programs through other universities, SPU students will study fashion merchandising, business, architecture, economics, nursing, marine biodiversity, and more. Says DeBell, “The world truly becomes the students’ classroom as book knowledge comes alive and their perspectives broaden.”
