| This is an introductory class designed to introduce some lesser-known trends in late 19th -century/early 20th -century European art that deal with the darker side of the human psyche rather than with light and air. While Freud was pioneering his psychiatric research, Symbolist and decadent artists were disregarding surface realism in favor of mysticism and dream imagery; they mined the imagination in search of a visual language of the soul. Aestheticism rejected moral and social themes in art, elevating purely aesthetic values ("art for art's sake"). Secessionist movements broke away from traditional art academies. These currents, applied to decorative and commercial art, flourished in Art Nouveau. Equivalent: CEU 3254. |
