EDCN 5590 Book Study: Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The SIOP Model (5 credits)

THE SIOP model operationalizes sheltered instruction by offering teachers a model for lesson planning and implementation that provides English learners with access to grade-level content standards. Includes graphic organizers, content and language objectives, teaching scenarios, the SIOP model including lesson plans and discussion of reading development and special education for English learners. Equivalent: CEU 2801.

EDCN 5633 Book Study: Reading, Writing and Learning in ESL (5 credits)

Provides practical strategies for promoting literacy and language development in English language learners from kindergarten through grade twelve. Explores contemporary language acquisition theory as it relates to instruction, and provides suggestions and methods for motivating and involving ELL students.

EDCN 5930 Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Learners with the SIOP Model (3 credits)

Provides SIOP-tested techniques for lessons that include the eight EIP components. These research-based techniques have been shown to be effective for English Language Learners. Promotes student-to-student and teacher-to-student interaction and involvement proven necessary for English language acquisition and content development. This course is an excellent follow-up to the original SIOP making English Comprehensible course. The authors have expanded their research and provided proven strategies to enhance learning for English Language Learners.

EDCN 5992 Teaching Learners of English in Mainstream Classrooms: K-8 (5 credits)

Provides clear principles, helpful strategies, and rich resources for K-8 teachers to support English language learners in content instruction. Emphasizes practical application of known second language learning principles, and offers specific strategies to teachers to accelerate the academic achievement of all their students. Uses techniques for developing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the content areas. Also gives classroom teaching vignettes with recommendations for the development of reading and writing skillls in both older pre-literate learners and under-educated learners. TESOL/WIDA Pre K-12 English Language Proficiency Standards are referenced and applied.
