EDCN 5986 Supporting Content-Area Literacy with Technology (3 credits)

Drawing on concepts of universal design and flexible curriculum access, this course offers up-to-the minute technology to make content literacy strategies more engaging and responsive to the students' diverse learning needs. The evidence-based procedures, explicit instruction strategies, and authentic activities guide teachers to integrate curriculum with English/language arts, social studies, science, and math content literacy. The course framework enables teachers to adapt the plan to their classroom resources and requirements, reducing the barriers to learning and increasing student achievement.

EDMU 5586 Essentials of Music Technology I (2 credits)

The focus of this course is to introduce the workings of the basic music technology "food groups" available to music educators and how to use these as a curriculum in the classroom by learning and developing lesson plans for them. The food groups will consist of: Notation software (Sibelius, Finale), Digital Audio/Sequencing (hardware recorders, mic techniques, Pro Tools), Music Theory/Ear Training (Alfred Essentials of Music Theory, Music Ac, Ear Master, Auralia, and others), Music Improvisation (Band in a Box). All course work conforms to the K-12 National Standards. Students will walk away with a working knowledge of the software/hardware and will have developed lesson plans for their specific classroom needs. Equivalent: CEU 3228.

Through the use of an interactive multimedia web site, the participant will be given the opportunity to explore the web, practice web searches, and learn how to incorporate these skills into the curriculum. Provides twelve exploration modules that allow students to explore, evaluate, problem solve, and locate a number of educational and interesting websites. These sites are both entertaining and educational. When will the Smithsonian traveling exhibit be in your area? Can you locate a University Library somewhere in the world? Where can I find the resource for my reference paper? How did my congressman vote on the last bill? The twelve modules provide students specific sites as well as a scavenger hunt to find new sites. After completing the course, participants will have a greater understanding of the capacity of the Internet and how to relate it to the classroom.

EDTE 5741 InDesign Technology Tools (1 credit)

Educators can use Adobe InDesign to enliven lessons and materials in all of their classes. A robust and easy-to-use page layout application, InDesign allows educators to produce sophisticated magazine and newspaper layouts, as well as newsletters, brochures, mailers, and any other kind of document they wish to create for their school or classroom. The course familiarizes students with the page layout and design features, helping them feel confident to produce single and multi-page documents. Also enables students to experience new levels of productivity with InDesign and explore more creative possiblities; whether designing a poster, creating a yearbook spread, or putting together a multi-page report. InDesign integrates smoothy with the Adobe tools that students and teachers use every day, streamlines repetitive tasks, reliably outputs pages, and offers powerful features for creating richer and more complex documents.
