POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Seattle Pacific University complies with federal regulations. Many of these are designed to protect your rights or provide you with information. You should be aware of the following federal regulations:


FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the right of parents of dependent students and students who are attending or have attended the University. More information about FERPA (as well as a history of federal legislation affecting schools and colleges) may be found at the U.S. Department of Education website.


HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was signed into law on August 21, 1996. This federal legislation protects the privacy of your medical records. Entities at SPU covered by HIPAA include the Health Center in Watson Hall, as well as several other offices that may have a need to deal with your records (such as the finance office for billing).

Drug-Free Schools and Communities

Seattle Pacific University is subject to the requirements of the federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act of 1989. The University annually distributes information regarding the restrictions and consequences of violations of each Act. The University strongly supports each Act and consistently ensures compliance with them. Any employee who has not received copies of the statements should contact the Office of Human Resources or click here.


Crime Statistics - Congress amended the Higher Education Act in 1998 to require reporting of crime statistics to give a fuller picture of campus security. For more information, visit the Office of Safety & Security website.
