This is a season of celebration at Seattle Pacific University as we mark the graduation of our Class of 2016 and plan for our incoming class of freshmen. With all these comings and goings, ceremonial moments, and work on the academic year to come, it is a good moment for me to pause and think about the privilege it is for me to serve this University as president.

New this year: earlier date for FAFSA filing

In order to provide students and families more time to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and to increase the form’s accuracy, President Obama took executive action to make the form available earlier. Starting this fall, the next academic year’s FAFSA will be available October 1, three months earlier than in past years. Go to the SFS How to Apply page for details about the 2017–18 FAFSA.

Advice from the Center for Career and Calling

Even though class is out, there are still many things your student can be doing this summer to move forward towards his or her vocational aspirations. Here are three:
  1. Meet people. Informational interviews are the very best way not only to help guide your student’s career direction, but also to help your student network into the next internship or job opportunity by meeting people who are doing things that interest your student.
  2. Try things. A summer job or internship of any kind will help your student learn more about his or her work strengths, interests, and values. This can translate into clarity for the career journey as well as some great content for your student’s résumé. Challenge your student to move outside his or her comfort zone and learn about others by traveling abroad or volunteering with a local population in need. Your student can use SPULink to find jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
  3. Join LinkedIn. Increasingly, social media presence is becoming vital to professional identity, so your student should take some time this summer to put his or her best face forward with a professional head shot and a clever LinkedIn profile that will open up new opportunities to — you guessed it — meet people and try things!
The Center for Career and Calling is open all summer (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to assist your student. Call or visit to schedule an appointment.

Alumni Facebook and LinkedIn pages

If your student is graduating this year, encourage him or her to join these networks:
  • The Alumni Facebook page, which connects and celebrates alumni and friends of Seattle Pacific University — strengthening lifelong relationships, and keeping your student up-to-date on life at SPU.
  • The Alumni LinkedIn page, SPU’s alumni-only closed group on LinkedIn, where your student can make professional connections and stay in touch with fellow alumni.
