|FERPA Training Required for Teaching Assistants, New Student Employees|
Student employees and teaching assistants who will work with the Banner Information System and/or handle confidential student records must receive training in FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). A training session is scheduled Thursday, October 9, from 9:30-10:20 a.m. in Demaray Hall 258. There is no need to sign up in advance.
|New Service Allows Access to Millions of Books for SPU Community|
Summit, the regional catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, is a new service available for SPU faculty, staff and students. More than 22 million books and other materials can be requested from academic libraries in Oregon and Washington. The Alliance includes all public four-year universities and colleges in the two-state region, as well as 11 private colleges and two community colleges. Books may be requested for two- to three-day delivery to the SPU library. On site borrowing is also available at any Alliance library with the presentation of a valid SPU ID. |Weekly Time of Prayer|
As the new school year begins, make plans to attend the 30-minute liturgical service of prayer and communion every Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Alexander Chapel. Faculty, staff and students are invited to come and pray for the SPU community and the world.
|Spanish Language Table on Thursdays|
Please join in conversation at the Spanish language table on Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. in the SUB. This is great practice for students, faculty and staff interested in improving their conversational command of Spanish! It's informal and listening is okay.
|Free Tickets for Faculty and Staff|
The Falcons invite all faculty and staff to join us for another exciting year of SPU athletics, and it won't cost you a dime. Faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children) to all regular season home events in Brougham Pavilion and -- if using the Interbay Shuttle -- home soccer games as well. Simply show your staff I.D. at the Brougham Pavilion ticket window or on board the shuttle to Interbay Stadium.
|Tell High School Students About the Christian College Fair|
The Seattle Christian College Fair is Wednesday, October 22, from 6-9 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church adjacent to the SPU campus. Admissions professionals representing more than 55 regional and national Christian colleges and universities will answer questions about Christian higher education, financial aid and scholarships. Refreshments will be served. High school and transfer students and their families are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at (206) 281-2021.
|Faculty, Staff Needed to Share at “Body" Cadre|
"The Body" Cadre beginning Winter Quarter is looking for staff, faculty and off-campus community members interested in sharing what God has taught them about their body. Has your vocation, culture, interests, relationships or passions given you a unique perspective on your body? If yes, SPU students want to hear from you. Each guest is asked to share for 30-45 minutes. Julie Church, dietitian in the Student Counseling Center, is coordinating this cadre. The "Milestones" section of the Fac/Staff Bulletin is a way to celebrate personal news of interest to the SPU community. Items such as births, anniversaries, church service, mission trips, marriages, adoptions, awards or athletic accomplishments are welcome. (Or anything else you'd like the whole campus to know!) Photographs are also accepted and may be submitted online or hand delivered to Tracy Cooper, Fac/Staff Bulletin editor, in University Communications, located in Lower Weter. |West Speaks on C.S. Lewis, Delivers Paper at APSA|
John West, associate professor of political science, spoke on "Standing for
Truth: Some Advice From C.S. Lewis" at the SPU Alumni Weekend at Camp Casey on
August 17. He also delivered a paper titled "Darwin's Public Policy: 19th Century Science and the Rise of the American Welfare State" at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in Philadelphia on August 28. During his trip, he did archival research on the history of the American eugenics movement at the American Philosophical Society Library next to Independence Hall.
|Sink and Stroh Publish Study|
Christopher Sink, professor of education and chair of school counseling and psychology, along with Heather Stroh, doctoral candidate in education and researcher at the Washington School Research Center, published their large-scale study in the latest issue of Professional School Counseling, the flagship journal of the American School Counselor Association. The research involved more than 20,000 second and third grade students drawn from 150 randomly selected Washington state elementary schools. The title of their publication is "Raising Achievement Test Scores of Early Elementary School Students Through Comprehensive School Counseling Programs" and can be found in Volume 6, No. 5, pp. 350-364.
|Mahar Accepted to Seminary|
Sarah Mahar, course processing coordinator in Student Academic Services and a 2003 SPU graduate, has recently been accepted to Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She will be pursuing her master's of arts in church history. Her seminary career will begin next fall. Congratulations, Sarah!
