|Veterans Day Chapel on November 13|
Thursday, November 13, at 9:30 a.m. is the annual Veterans Day Chapel in First Free Methodist Church. The guest speaker is Josh Van Eaton, a '97 graduate of SPU and now a JAG lawyer. There will be a flag-raising ceremony beginning at 9:10 a.m. in Tiffany Loop, followed by the chapel. The SPU community is invited to attend.
|Campus Ministries Invites You to Submit Prayer Requests|
The SPU Thanksgiving Communion Service will be held Tuesday, November 25. During the service there will be an opportunity to pray for each other and lift up the SPU community, city and world in prayer. Campus Ministries is inviting you to send in your personal prayer requests to be included in the bulletin for the SPU community to use as a prayer guide. If you would like to submit a prayer request, email Christi Scovil at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please let Christi know if you would like your request to be listed anonymously. Also during the Thanksgiving Service we take an offering to support the Campus Ministries Benevolence Fund, which is used to assist students with unanticipated financial crisis. |Eaton's Annual Christmas Celebration for Faculty, Staff and Spouses|
President and Mrs. Philip Eaton will be hosting their annual Christmas Celebration for all faculty, staff and spouses on Tuesday, December 9, from 6-8:30 p.m. at Hillford House, 600 W. Dravus Street. |SPU's Instrumental Groups Perform November 14|
Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Flute Ensemble (formerly Flutissimo!) will perform on Friday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the First Free Methodist Church. The performance is free, open to the public and handicap accessible. SPU's Symphonic Wind Ensemble consists of 40 instrumentalists and performs a variety of music. The Flute Ensemble consists of SPU flute students and select alumni. The Percussion Ensemble includes ethnic drums and mallet and percussion instruments. Part of the repertoire for the evening includes Shostakovich's “Festive" Overture and Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 for the Organ.
|Bioethics and Cloning|
Author and researcher Wesley J. Smith addresses the moral implications in advancing technology during a public lecture on Thursday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the Fine Center in First Free Methodist Church on the SPU campus. The event is free and sponsored by SPU's Political Union, Faith and Politics Cadre and ASSP.
|2004-2005 SFS Undergraduate Scholarship Applications|
It is time once again for students who intend to return to SPU as full-time undergraduates in 2004-2005 to complete a Student Financial Services (SFS) Undergraduate Scholarship application. Part of this application includes a reference form, which many of you may be asked to complete. Please remember to fill it out as completely as you can. You can forward your completed form directly to Glenda Ellingson, program manager of grants and scholarships, in Suite 114, or give it back to the student in a sealed envelope to turn in on your behalf. Please don't delay. The students have to have all of their application materials in by December 5 and we will not be able to accept late references. |SPU Theatre Presents “A Curious Savage" This Week|
The SPU Theatre Department will present the comic morality tale “A Curious Savage," November 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre, located in McKinley Hall. (There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, November 22, at 2 p.m.). Written by playwright John Patrick, the comedy centers around Mrs. Ethel Savage, an eccentric, wealthy widow, who proposes to donate her inheritance to a good cause. Enraged, her spiteful stepchildren commit her to an institution. The plan backfires when Mrs. Savage leads them on a merry chase. The play is directed by adjunct faculty member Karen Lund and set design is by Don Yanik. General admission tickets are $10 and $8 for students and senior citizens and can be reserved by calling the McKinley Theatre Box Office (206-281-2959) from 12:30-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday or one hour before performance.
|Advance Registration for Winter Quarter|
Advance registration for Winter Quarter is coming soon! All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time. Winter registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, November 17. Winter registration for graduate students begins Monday, November 24. |Nursing Applications Due February 1, 2004|
Prenursing faculty and advisors, please note: EARLY DUE DATE - NURSING APPLICATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 1, 2004. Students must complete all of the prerequisite courses by the end of Spring Quarter to be considered for Autumn 2004 entry. Minimum GPA of 2.65 will be raised to 2.75 for 2005 entry. The 2005 catalog will read, "A minimum GPA in the natural and social science prerequisite courses is expected; a 3.0 GPA is preferred. GPA does not guarantee admission to the program. Grades less than a ‘C' will not be accepted." Applications are available at the Lydia Green Nursing Program office in Marston Hall, third floor. Applications are also available on the Web site.

|Bartlett Coauthors Paper|
Kevin Bartlett, assistant professor of chemistry, was coauthor along with Princeton University colleagues M. E. Blake and M. Jones Jr. of a recent paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society titled, “A m-Benzyne to o-Benzyne Conversion through a 1,2-shift of a Phenyl Group."
|McFarland Coauthors Two Papers|
Ben McFarland, assistant professor of biochemistry, along with colleagues from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, (T. Kortemme, S. F. Yu, D. Baker and R. K. Strong), recently published a paper in Structure titled “Symmetry Recognizing Asymmetry. Analysis of the Interactions Between the C-Type Lectin-like Immunoreceptor, NKG2D and MHC ClassI-like Ligands." McFarland and Strong had a second paper titled “Thermodynamic Analysis of Degenerate Recognition by the NKG2D Immunoreceptor: Not 'Induced Fit' but 'Rigid Adaptation,'" accepted for publication next year by Immunity.
|Phelan Coauthors Two Papers|
Greg Phelan, assistant professor of chemistry, coauthored several papers in the
last six months, mostly with University of Washington colleagues. Currently at
press is a paper titled “Dual Luminophor Pressure Sensitive Paint. II: Lifetime
Based Measurement of Pressure and Temperature" in the peer-reviewed research
journal Sensor and Actuator (coauthors B. Zelelow; G. Khalil; B. Carlson;
M. Gouterman; J. Callis and L. Dalton). Also at press is a paper titled “Europium Beta-diketonate Temperature Sensors: Effects of Ligands, Matrix and Concentration" in the Review of Scientific Instruments, (coauthors G. Khalil; K. Lau; B. Carlson; M. Gouterman; J. B. Callis and L. R. Dalton).
|Ellis Presents at Whitworth, University of Idaho|
Professor of Education Arthur Ellis made presentations to students in the School of Education at Whitworth College on October 29 and to students in the College of Education at the University of Idaho on October 30. In both cases the topic was the relationship between reflective practice and academic achievement in schools.
|Maddox Appointed Associate Editor of “Wesley Works"|
Randy Maddox, the Paul T. Walls professor of Wesleyan Theology, has recently been appointed as associate general editor of the “Wesley Works" editorial project. In this role he will help facilitate the production of the 15 volumes remaining to be published in this series.
