Winter Quarter Academic Deadlines

Increasing Class Enrollment Ends Wednesday, January 5. If you would like to accommodate the students on your waitlist, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, contact Ingrid Steele at or (206) 281-2635 in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 3 p.m. on January 5 to have your class enrollment increased. In order to stop the waitlist on January 5, the timeline for increasing enrollment needs to match the waitlist deadline.
Waitlist Ends Wednesday, January 5. The SPU waitlist policy is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on January 5. The waitlist operates on a first-on, first-off approach. If space opens up in a waitlisted class, SAS will contact students who have been registered from the waitlist.
Last Day to Add Classes Is Monday, January 10. Students are able to register, add and drop courses until 5 p.m. on January 10. After this time, Web registration is no longer available for Winter Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes including classes that meet once a week.
Other Registration Deadlines. Students may register for the following internships by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 18, in SAS, located in Demaray Hall 150: Internships that require the “Internship Learning Contract;" Independent Study 4900/6900 that require the Independent Study Agreement; individual instruction in music that require a one-on-one session with the instructor; individual practicums 4930 that require the Special Approval Form; Special Projects 4960 that usually requires the Special Approval Form; Independent Readings 4920 that require the Independent Study Agreement; and dissertation 7995/7999.

Campus Compact Conference Coming Up in Portland

The eighth annual Campus Compact Continuums of Service conference, "Building Bridges: Values, Knowledge, and Skills for Vibrant Communities and Campuses," will welcome more than 500 colleagues to Portland, Oregon, April 11-13, 2005. SPU is a member of the Washington Campus Compact. Attendees from throughout the Western Region and beyond will explore multiple perspectives on the relationships between higher education and communities, and the roles service-learning and civic engagement can play in invigorating them. The conference has become a national model for professional development among service-learning practitioners including faculty, administrators, students, and community partners. The conference provides practitioners opportunities to publicly present their work and network with service-learning professionals from throughout the Campus Compact Western Region. New Weight Watchers Series for Faculty, Staff

The 11-week winter faculty and staff Weight Watchers series will be held Tuesdays, 12:15-1 p.m. in MSLC 127, beginning January 11. Staff Payroll Change?

Mileage Rate Increase for 2005

Please note the IRS raised the standard mileage rate to 40.5 cents per mile for business miles driven beginning January 1, 2005. Please call the Finance Office at (206) 281-2066 if you have any questions.

Start Making Your Summer Requests for Casey

February 1 is the deadline for placing your online request for a summer 2005 reservation in the Victorian-style officers' house at Camp Casey, SPU's historical beach property on Whidbey Island. All full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff are eligible. The turn-of-the-century house – once part of the coastal military fortress known as "Fort Casey" and now called the Faculty/Staff House – is available for your personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes a weeklong rental of either the east or west side of the house for you and your guests, access to the beach, gym, outdoor swimming pool, and other amenities at the conference center. All requests taken at this time are for stays at Camp Casey between June 20 and September 11, 2005. Please indicate five date choices on your request. Results will be available by February 28. Due to the high demand and way the "Casey Point System" works, it is unlikely a faculty or staff person will be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. Still, it is good to submit a request every January to get yourself placed on the summer waiting list. If you are offered a spot, it's a wonderful opportunity for you, your family, and friends to enjoy a memorable week in the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey. “Montage for Martin" Features Newby, SPU Gospel Choir

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s eldest daughter, Yolanda King, will narrate a musical oratorio in honor of her late father at Seattle Symphony's Benaroya Hall on Sunday, January 9. “Montage for Martin: A Contemporary Oratorio" is a musical tribute based on the life of Dr. King and features several local choirs and musicians, including SPU's Gospel Choir. The tribute is a combination of gospel, classical, jazz, hip-hop, and rap music, composed and directed by SPU's Minister of Worship Stephen Newby. The performances will be 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Reserved tickets are $25 and $35. Hartje Presents at International Design Conference

Sandra Hartje, associate professor in family and consumer sciences, presented a session titled "Developing a Checklist of Universal Design Features, Materials, and Products for New Construction in Housing" at the “Designing for the 21st Century III–An International Conference on Universal Design" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, December 7-12, 2004. Other presentation topics included the design of transportation, industrial design, commercial, retail, medical, and academic buildings, public policy, and urban design.

Nemtchinova Presents at International Academy of Linguistics

Katya Nemtchinova, assistant professor of TESOL and Russian, recently presented a paper titled "Patterns of Code-Switching in Young Russian-English Bilinguals: Language Development or Language Attrition?" at the International Academy of Linguistics, Social, and Behavioral Sciences, in Cancun, Mexico. In her presentation, Katya analyzed the patterns of intra-sentential code-switching in the speech of 12 Russian children placed in an English-speaking environment.


SPU Alum Chosen for Next “Apprentice" Series

SPU alum Alex Thomason '00 was recently selected as one of 18 candidates for the NBC's reality business show “The Apprentice." Alex is currently an assistant deputy prosecutor for King County. The next series starts January 20. Read more online. More

SPU's Minister of Worship Stephen Newby and a musical montage he composed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were featured in The Herald (Everett, Washington) on December 31. “Montage for Martin" will be performed January 9 in Benaroya Hall and will be narrated by Dr. King's eldest daughter, Yolanda King.
