|SFS Closed Midday on Dec. 19|
On Monday, December 19, Student Financial Services (SFS) will be closed from 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. for their annual office Christmas celebration. Signage will be posted in the SFS lobby prior to the event. Please keep this in mind when talking to students. Thank you for your support.
|Autumn Quarter Grades Due Dec. 19|
Autumn Quarter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 19. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the Web, in person, placed in the SAS drop box (located outside Demaray Hall 151), mailed, or faxed to 206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and processing enrollment verification. If instructors want grades to appear on the Web before December 19, contact Student Records Coordinator Kelli Knapp at firstname.lastname@example.org. If there are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS prior to the grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. |Winter On-Campus Weight Watchers Series Begins Jan. 10|
The winter on-campus Weight Watchers series is looking for new members. Begin the new year with a healthy and doable eating plan with great group support. (This is not just a temporary diet.) |Peer Advisor Nominations Needed by Jan. 5|
The peer-advisor selection process for 2006-07 is coming up fast and we need your help in obtaining nominations for qualified candidates. Our campus is blessed with many students who have exceptional academic, spiritual, and leadership gifts. However, if you know students who rise above — leaders among leaders — we would greatly appreciate your participation in nominating them for the selection process. |Staff Forum on Dec. 14|
The SPU Staff Council invites staff members to join us at the first Staff Forum of the year, Tuesday, December 14, 9-10:30 a.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. We'll hear members of the health sciences department share their amazing stories and pictures from their Hurricane Katrina relief trip in September. There will also be a time of worship and fellowship as a community. Beverage and snacks will be served.

|Beers Presents at National Reading Conference|
Scott Beers, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, presented a
paper at the National Reading Conference in Miami on December 1. His
presentation was titled "Adolescents Reading During Writing: Eye Movements, Writing, and Gender Differences."
|Capp Presents at Society for Ethnomusicology Conference|
Myrna Capp, adjunct faculty in music, and W.C. Nyaho, pianist from Ghana, presented a lecture and recital of “Works by Composers of African Descent: Repetitive Patterns and Their Use in Selected Piano Pieces" at the 50th annual meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology. The conference was held in Atlanta, and was hosted by Emory University. Piano works by composers from Nigeria, Guadalupe, South Africa, Ghana, Jamaica, and the United States were included.
|Chaney Nominated for Graves Award|
President Eaton recently named Chris Chaney, assistant professor of English, as the SPU nominee for a Graves Award in the Humanities for 2005. The Graves Award is administered at Pomona College under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies. Forty-one institutions in California, Oregon, and Washington are eligible to submit one nominee for these awards, which are intended to encourage and to reward “outstanding accomplishment in actual teaching in the humanities by younger faculty members." About nine Graves Award winners are selected biennially. Chris' research proposal includes traveling to England to work at the British Library and the National Portrait Gallery on a project called “Self-Portraiture in Art and Literature." President Eaton himself won a Graves Award in his early years as a Whitworth College faculty member.

An opinion piece by SPU Professor of Geography Kathleen Braden appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on December 6. In her piece, she states, “Perhaps democracy and civil society is not built with a multimillion-dollar grant from the World Bank, but by befriending and celebrating each Russian who works for change, one brave soul at a time."
