What Are You Doing Outside of SPU?

The "Milestones" section of the Fac/Staff Bulletin is a way to celebrate personal news of interest to the SPU community. Items such as births, anniversaries, church service, mission trips, marriages, adoptions, awards, or athletic accomplishments are welcome. (Or anything else you'd like the whole campus to know!) Photographs are also accepted. Items may be submitted online by selecting the "Submit Bulletin Items" at the top of the Fac/Staff Bulletin main page.

Looking for a Past Edition of the Fac/Staff Bulletin?

Many previous issues of the Fac/Staff Bulletin (starting September 25, 2000) are available online. To review a previous issue, select "Archives" from any Fac/Staff Bulletin or via Campus eNews from the SPU home page.

What to Do If You're Contacted by a Reporter

Tracy Norlen, news and media relations manager in University Communications (UC), is responsible for handling all media contacts with SPU. When a reporter calls UC to request an interview or come to campus, Tracy contacts the appropriate people to get permission and make arrangements. Although most reporters do call UC first, some will contact offices or departments directly. If an SPU staff member is contacted by a reporter, please refer them to Tracy at 206-281-2977. She will find out the nature of the story and follow up with the staff member. Faculty members can refer the call to Tracy or answer the call directly. However, UC does track media requests for possible follow up, so let Tracy know if you've been contacted by a reporter. Also, if you see reporters, photographers, or camera people on campus without a staff or faculty member present, call Tracy immediately. If you have any questions, contact Tracy at

A new book has been published about cross county coach Doris Brown Heritage, SPU's own five-time world cross county champion, two-time Olympian, Olympic coach, and inductee into the Track & Field Hall of Fame, Distance Running Hall of Fame, and the Coaches Hall of Fame. The book, titled The Fragile Champion, was written by Doris' longtime coach and former SPU track and field coach, Ken Foreman. It's available for purchase from SPU, with a portion of the proceeds going toward the Heritage or Foreman Athletic Endowments. Visit the Web site for more information. More

Public Events for Next Year?

Twice a year, the Office of University Communications publishes a community events brochure titled “Engage," highlighting a sampling of campus events of interest to the public. Previous brochures have invited neighbors to guest lectures, symposia, concerts, athletic events, gallery showings, theatre productions, etc. This brochure is sent to more than 35,000 alumni, friends, and Seattle neighbors. We are now collecting event information for the 2006-07 academic year, especially events during Autumn and Winter quarters. If you are planning an event of interest to the public, please forward the information to Tracy Norlen in University Communications at We are also interested in any possible events you may be planning, so please send that information as well. If you have questions, contact Tracy at 206-281-2977.

Hanson Gives Symphony Lectures

Eric Hanson, professor of music, recently presented lectures for the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall. The title of his paper was "Night and Day: Mahler's Seventh Symphony." It posited that meaning in Mahler's Seventh Symphony can be derived from his failed attempt to expurgate the nihilism of his Sixth Symphony. On June 27, Hanson conducted Mahler's Seventh Symphony in a special reading for the Northwest Mahler Festival.
