Registration via the web is no longer available, and the deadline for adding classes for Winter Quarter has passed. Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit, or register for an internship, independent study, or individual instruction in music, may do so in Student Academic Services in Demaray Hall 151 until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17. A list of classes with the extended deadline may be found online.
|Submit Your Request for a Summer Week at Camp Casey|
Full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff: February 1 is the deadline for placing
your online request for a summer 2007 reservation in one of the Victorian-style
officer houses at SPU's historical beach property, Camp Casey Conference Center
on Whidbey Island. The turn-of-the-century houses, once part of the coastal
military fortress known as Fort Casey, are available for your personal vacation
use for a nominal booking fee of $100. The fee includes a week-long rental of a
house for you and your guests, access to the outdoor swimming pool, gym, beach, and
other amenities at the conference center. To see photos, visit the Camp Casey website at www.spu.edu/depts/casey/. Use the website to place your request. All requests are for stays at Camp Casey between June 11 and September 9, 2007. Please indicate five date choices on your request. Results will be available by February 28. Due to high demand and way the “Casey Point System" works, it is unlikely for a faculty or staff person to be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. But, it is good to submit a request every January to get yourself placed on the summer waiting list. This is a wonderful opportunity for your family and friends to enjoy a memorable week in the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey – collect rocks on the beach, fly a kite, dine out, shop and explore Coupeville and Port Townsend, and relax by the heated swimming pool. |“A Week With Dr. King"|
A group of students, faculty, and staff have planned a Martin Luther King
Celebration Week titled "A Week with Dr. King," January 16-19. (Some of the events
scheduled for January 16 have been rescheduled for January 23). The goal of the
week is to actively honor and remember King, and also explore the continued
relevance of King's life and legacy to our current local, global, and historical
context. This week aims to promote campuswide dialogue and reflection around the
life, legacy, and witness of King, and the relationship between his faith and
activism. The events are sponsored by Campus Ministries, Center for Scholarship
and Faculty Development, the Perkins Center, Student Programs, Mosaic, History

|Falcon Gymnastics on Friday|
SPU gymnasts face the University of California-Davis on Friday, January 19, at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. General admission tickets for all SPU home gymnastics meets are $5 and $3 for students, youth and senior citizens with proper identification. |Image/SPU Film Festival, Jan. 26-28|
“Boy Meets Girl: Romance and Reality in the Movies" is the theme for this year's Image journal/SPU Film Festival. This year's festival presents five films about love, “Tootsie," “Shadowlands," “When Harry Met Sally," “The Awful Truth," and “The War of the Roses." After each film, a panel of faculty and students will lead a discussion and field comments and questions from the audience. Free popcorn and other goodies will be served. Each film will be screened in Upper Gwinn Commons. Students receive CFE credit for attending at least two screenings and staying for the panel discussions. |Falcon Legends Hall of Fame Luncheon Feb. 2|
The Falcon Legends Hall of Fame inducts the Class of 2007 on Friday, February 2,
during a luncheon ceremony beginning at 11:45 a.m. in the Queen Anne Room of
Gwinn Commons. Inductees include wrestling coach Frank Furtado (1965-74), the late
Orville Anderson (1956-59), Linda Johnson Cooper (1985-89), and Anita Sartin
Berhbaum (1986-87). In addition, former SPU board of trustees chairman
V.O. “Bud" McDole will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Luncheon

|Falcon Basketball This Week|
The Falcon women's basketball team plays two home games this week, Thursday, January 18, and Saturday, January 20. Both games start at 7 p.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion. |Free Homecoming Basketball Tickets|
All SPU faculty and staff are eligible to receive two complimentary Homecoming basketball tickets for the doubleheader on Saturday, February 3, beginning with the women's game at 1:30 p.m. Tickets may be picked up in the Athletics Office this week between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. SPU ID is required. |Flu Shots Still Available|
Don't get caught with the flu this winter. Get a flu shot at the SPU Health Center. Shots are $20 (cash, check, or SFS account). Make an appointment today at 206-281-2231. Students, staff, faculty, and immediate family members over age 13 are eligible. A receipt can be provided for insurance and/or flexible spending accounts.

The SPU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will tour Denver, Colorado, and surrounding areas during Spring Break, March 17-25, 2007. The choirs are now finalizing their tour. If you have friends or families in the Denver area, please ask them if they would like to have the choirs perform in their church or school, or if they would be willing to provide a homestay for some of the students. |Steele's New Book Published|
I've Been Wondering: Conversations With Young Theologians is the new book by Rick Steele, professor of moral and historical theology. The book was published by Paternoster Press (Atlanta). This book is very much an all-SPU project. It contains a selection of email correspondence between Rick and students in his SPU undergraduate theology classes on matters pertaining to Christian faith and ethics. The contents were selected and arranged by a cadre of SPU theology majors. Most books of theology are written by professors who are trying to answer the questions they think their students (or their colleagues in the guild) ought to be asking. This book shows what happens when a professor is trying to listen carefully to the questions that students actually ask – many of which are profoundly personal and existential. |Brown, Newby Perform in MLK Jr. Celebration|
Assistant professors of music Carlene Brown and Stephen Newby were featured performers for the 20th annual King County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on January 11 at Benaroya Hall. Hosted by King Country Executive Ron Sims and King County Council Chair Larry Gossett, the event for King County employees was recorded for King County-TV and will be televised repeatedly throughout January and February.
