|Summer Requests for Camp Casey|
Full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff can make an online request for a summer 2008 reservation in one of the Victorian-style officers' houses at SPU's Camp Casey Conference Center, located on historical beach property on Whidbey Island. The turn-of- the-century houses, once part of the coastal military fortress known as Fort Casey, are available for personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes a weeklong rental of a house for you and your guests, access to the outdoor swimming pool, gym, beach, and other amenities at the conference center. Enjoy the quiet, rural, historical beauty of Camp Casey, as well as the nearby towns of Coupeville and Port Townsend. All requests are for stays between June 16 and September 14. Please indicate five date choices on your request. The deadline to make a reservation request is February 15. Results will be available by March 15. Due to high demand and the “Casey Point system" for summer requests, it's unlikely for a faculty or staff member to be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. But you are encouraged to submit a request every January to get placed on the summer waiting list. |Exercise Science Majors Can Help You Get in Shape|
Senior exercise science majors are available on a limited basis to offer a variety of services to help faculty and staff with physical activity and fitness goals. Services range from instruction on a single exercise or physical fitness component to a complete fitness assessment and personal training. Students can also help find ways to work health-enhancing physical activity into daily tasks. To take advantage of this free service and help students earn practicum credit, please stop by the Physical Education and Exercise Science Office in Brougham Pavilion or call 206-281-2081 and tell the receptionist what kind of service you desire. A record of your request will be made, and a student will contact you within a week to set up an appointment.
|Undergraduate Academic Counselors Accepting Drop-In Appointments|
Undergraduate academic counselors in Student Academic Services will accept drop-in appointments with students during the first five days of the quarter on a first-come, first-served basis. These brief meetings are intended for students who have Winter 2008 scheduling and registration issues, or who are on academic probation. Faculty and staff who are working with students in these situations are encouraged to tell them about the drop-in appointments. Drop-ins will take place Thursday, January, through Wednesday January 9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students may check in at the front desk of the Undergraduate Admissions and Academic Counseling Office in Demaray Hall 120.
|Campus Weight Watcher Group Begins Jan.15|
A 10-week Weight Watchers session begins on campus January 15 and runs through March 11. It's a terrific program for successful weight loss and good health. Last quarter our group as a whole lost more than 100 pounds! Weekly meetings are held Tuesdays at 11:45 a.m. for one hour in Bertona 1 (new location). Registration is required. |Campus Cards for Faculty, Staff|
SPU faculty and staff are issued a campus card at no charge during their orientation period. The campus card is used for the following purposes: (1) photo identification, (2) meal-plan access, (3) building entrance, (4) SPU Library privileges, and (5) admission to, or discounts on, certain SPU-sponsored events (sporting events, theater productions, etc.).
If necessary, a faculty or staff member may obtain a replacement campus card for $20 at the Office of University Services during regular business hours, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. If you lose your card or it is stolen, please notify University Services immediately so that your card can be given inactive status to ensure your security. If you have misplaced your card, you may purchase a three-day, temporary card for $5. It will allow you the faculty/staff meal rate at Gwinn Commons and access to the Library, but it is not valid for accessing Advantage and SPU Points. If you do not have a valid SPU campus card or a temporary card, you will be expected to pay cash at all food-service locations on campus. A campus card is for only your use. If you allow another person to use your card to access food service, building entrance, or identification, both parties will be subject to disciplinary actions. |Inclement Weather Coming?|
The quickest way to learn if SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800, or visit the SPU home page. The phone line and home page will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.
|SPU Theatre Presents a Musical Comedy for All Ages|
SPU's Theatre Department will present HONK!, a delightful musical comedy adaptation of The Ugly Duckling, January 24-26, and January 31-February 2 in E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Matinee performances at 2 p.m. will be January 26 and February 2. The musical is an award-winning version of Hans Christian Anderson's classic tale of being different, growing up, leaving the nest, and finding home. |Do You Have Family or Friends in Eastern Washington?|
The SPU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will tour Eastern Washington and surrounding areas during Spring Break, March 15-18, 2008. The choirs are now arranging bookings for their tour. If you have friends or families in the Eastern Washington area, please ask them if they would like to have the choirs perform in their church or school, or if they would be willing to provide a homestay for some of the students. University Players, a six-member drama troupe of SPU students, will visit Northern California during Spring Break, March 15-20, 2008. |The “Last Lecture" by Stiling|
SPU's Ivy Honorary presents "The Last Lecture of Dr. Stiling" on Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The lecture by Associate Professor of History Rod Stiling titled "Keeping On," is based on the question "If you had one last chance to reach the students of SPU, what would you say?" This event is co-sponsored by Ivy Honorary and the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development. Refreshments will be provided.
|Henry's Article Published|
Assistant Professor of Political Science Caleb Henry's article "Joab: A Biblical Critique of Machiavellian Tactics" was published in the Westminster Theological Journal (Fall 2007). Henry argues that the Old Testament picture of Joab presents a latent critique of his amoral political ambition that directly applies to Machiavelli's tactics and goals.
|Wilson, Colleagues' Article Published|
Associate Professor Beverly Wilson and colleagues recently published the manuscript “A Computerized Task for Investigating the Relation Between Attentional and Emotional Processes in Children" in the Journal of Genetic Psychology.

|Phelan Interviewed in WesternTrek|
Jenifer Phelan, education liaison/remote services librarian, was interviewed for
an article in the Online Computer Library Center's magazine WesternTrek.
(Fall 2007). Phelan talks about SPU Library's “Student Response System." The
system includes two kits of 25 handheld clickers and a portable receiver that can
be used for library instruction, or can be checked out from the library by faculty
to use in class. The kits can be used independently, or together for groups of up
to 50 students. The clickers are designed to allow students to provide
instantaneous feedback to multiple choice of numeric based questions.
