|Day of Common Learning Oct. 15|
Faculty, staff, and students will participate in SPU's seventh annual Day of Common Learning on Wednesday, October 15. (SPU offices will be closed from 9:45 a.m. until 11 a.m.) This year's theme is “Beauty." Dr. Nicholas Wolterstorff, emeritus professor of philosophical theology at Yale Divinity School, will give the morning's keynote address in Brougham Pavilion titled “Beauty, Love, Justice, and Worship." The afternoon sessions include “Beauty and the Bible," “Dr. Seuss and the Poetics of Beauty: Why the Grinch, Sneetches, and Lorax Matter Today," “The Beauty of Diversity: Fostering a Positive Learning Environment," “Enduring Beauty Amidst Fractured Landscapes: The Columbia River Wanapum Indian Experience," and many others. Tuesday, October 7, Demaray Hall, room 150, 5:30 p.m. Presidential Debate Viewing Party. Students will have the opportunity to view the presidential debate, followed by a faculty panel discussion.
|Sacred Sounds Group Discount Deadline Extended|
Group tickets for the 4 p.m. performance of SPU's Sacred Sounds of Christmas
concert are sold out, but we've extended the deadline for group discounts for
the 7 p.m. performance to faculty and staff. The deadline for group tickets is
Friday, October 10, at 5 p.m. These are orchestra-level seats. If you're
thinking of attending the concert, you can't afford to pass up this deal.
Individual orchestra-level seats (purchasable through Ticketmaster) are now $20
plus a $4.85 convenience fee for each ticket. Through October 10, you can get
10 or more tickets for $12 each, with no surcharge. That means for the price of

|Library Hosts SPU-Author Readings|
Don't miss “Thursday Food for Thought," brought to you by the SPU Library. Bring your lunch to the Library Reading Room on Thursdays and hear SPU authors share from their latest works. A question-and-answer time follows, and copies of books will be available for purchase. During Autumn Quarter, the series runs October 16–November 20, 12:30–1:15 p.m. Professor of History Bill Woodward leads off the series on October 16 with his presentation, “Runs, Hits, and ‘Eras,'" the story of Major League Baseball and its connection with the larger American culture. |Welcome Prospective Students and Families on SPU Visit Days|
October 3, 10, 17, and November 7 are “SPU Fridays," which are one-day visits for prospective students and their families. The day includes a campus tour, classroom visits, student/faculty panel, financial aid and admissions information, and lunch in Gwinn Commons. Be sure to look for these students on Fridays and say “hi."
|Physics Department Receives $3.7 Million Grant|
The Physics Department received a five-year, $3.7 million National Science Foundation grant to investigate student thinking about energy from childhood through college, and to study how teachers learn to assess student thinking. Congratulations!

|Faculty, Staff Invited to Donate to Date Auction|
Date Auction is an event put together by the Student Union Board (STUB) every
year to raise money for a local charity as well as SPU's SPRINT program. Contrary
to popular belief, the Date Auction does not auction people as dates, but auctions
entertaining packages for students to experience together with friends. STUB also
holds a silent auction in which students bid on items of interest. This year's Date
Auction is Friday, November 7, and will also include a dessert auction. This year's
charity is Urban Impact, a non-profit organization based in Seattle's Rainier
Valley. Urban Impact offers after-school tutoring programs for struggling students,
an affordable health and fitness club, and several other ministries serving the
local community. STUB would like to invite faculty and staff to be a part of
donating toward the Date Auction. Perhaps you have a passion for boating or enjoy
cooking and baking for others? Maybe you are a movie buff or have extra tickets to
the Seahawks, Mariners, or Seattle Sounders? We would love the SPU faculty and
staff to help out STUB by getting involved and being creative by thinking outside of the box! Associate Vice President of Student Life Jeff Jordan is a prime example of an appreciated donor. Last year, he rented a big screen television and hosted a Super Bowl Party for 20 students. Donations need to include the name of the activity, time, date, place, and number of students (at least two or more). STUB would also welcome any donations for the Silent Auction, such as gift cards, theme baskets, movie passes, or donations for the Dessert Auction. |Medina Lectures on “Parenting With the Brain in Mind"|
SPU Director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research John Medina will give two lectures about early childhood development and learning as part of University Presbyterian Church's "Parents Learning Together" series. The lectures are October 15 and October 22 at University Presbyterian Church, located at 4540 15th Avenue NE, 7-8:30 p.m. His lectures will focus on what parents should know about their children's development and learning. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and the author of Brain Rules.
|Stationery Orders Between October 9-17|
If you plan to order stationery during early October, note that owners of Vision Press, the printing company responsible for SPU stationery products, will be on vacation from Thursday, October 9, to Friday, October 17. If you placed an order that was processed on Tuesday, September 30, and gave quick approval to the proofs faxed to you on Tuesday, September 30, you will receive your order Wednesday, October 8. Orders processed on Tuesday, October 7, and approved by noon on Wednesday, October 8, will be delivered Monday, October 20. Orders placed by Tuesday, October 14, will be processed and delivered with the orders processed Tuesday, October 21.

Professor of Political Science Reed Davis'article, "An Uncertain Trumpet: The Cold War Diplomacy of Raymond Aron," appears in the October issue of Review of International Studies, published by Cambridge University Press.
|Ferreiro's Book Reviews, Articles Published|
Two book reviews by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro have been
published in the journal Francia 35, (2008), a publication of the Deutsches
Historisches Institut in Paris. He reviewed André Bonnery La Septimanie au
regard de l'histoire, (Editions Loubatières, 2005), and John H. Moorhead's
Gregory the Great
(Early Christian Studies, Oxford University Press, 2005). Alberto's articles
"Adoptionism," "Isidore of Seville," "Visigothic Hispano-Roman Councils,"
"Priscillian," "Mozarab Rite," "Reconquest," and "Martin of Braga" were published
in The New Westminster Dictionary of Church History (Westminster-John Knox
Press, 2008). Also, his keynote address for the “Sacred Steps" photo-art exhibit
earlier this year of the pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela in St. James
Cathedral, Seattle, will be published in its expanded form in Iacobus
(Centro de Estudios Jacobeos, Spain).
|McKenna's Book Published|
Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology Rob McKenna's book titled Dying to Lead: Sacrificial Leadership in a Self-Centered World has just been published. The book is written for leaders in businesses, churches, and other organizations as a reflective guide into the pressures and realities that leaders face every day on the job.
|Keuss' Article Published|
An article by Associate Professor of Christian Ministry Jeff Keuss titled “Breathing Lessons: A Vision for Campus Ministries in the Twenty-First Century" was recently published in The Other Journal: An Intersection of Theology and Culture (Issue #12: Education Issue, September 26, 2008). The article revisits Steven Garber's work from The Fabric of Faithfulness, and argues for a four-fold realignment of campus ministry foci at Christian liberal arts colleges and universities as they enter the 21st century. The article is available online.
|Koskela's Essays Published, Elected to FM Board|
Five “Theological Themes" essays on the Gospel of Matthew by Assistant Professor of Theology Doug Koskela were published in Lectionary Homiletics in June 2008. Doug was also elected to the Ministerial Education and Guidance Board for the Pacific Northwest Conference of the Free Methodist Church.
|Strong Gives Keynote Address|
School of Theology Dean Doug Strong was the keynote speaker at the United Methodist Transgenerational Korean-American Convocation in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in August.
|Hanson Lectures at Seattle Symphony|
Professor of Music Eric Hanson presented the preconcert lectures to the
Seattle Symphony audience in Benaroya Hall, September 25-28. His presentation was
titled "Symphony of a Thousand: The Will Posits a Goal," and demonstrated how Mahler posited the goal of the striving will, the “Eternal Masculine," to be first the Holy Spirit and then the “Eternal Feminine."
|Vogt's Grammar Books Published|
Three grammar books written by Associate Professor of Spanish Eric Vogt were published by the tradebook division of McGraw Hill in August 2008. His volumes are part of a series called Practice Makes Perfect, available via Amazon.com. The books are The Spanish Subjunctive Up Close, Spanish Pronouns Up Close, and Past Tenses in Spanish Up Close. According to his editor, the subjunctive book has been rated number one in its category in Amazon.com.
