SPU Welcomes the Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium

SPU will welcome more than 100 high school students to campus as part of the Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (WJSHS). These students, from all over Washington state, have completed outstanding research in science, math, technology, and engineering. They will present their work in both oral presentations and poster formats on Thursday, March 17, and Friday, March 18, in Upper Gwinn. Faculty and staff are especially invited to come by and see the poster presentations on Thursday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. If you see students on campus who have "special" name tags, give them a personal welcome. Request a Reservation for Upper Gwinn

Conference Services is now taking requests to reserve Upper Gwinn during the 2011-12 academic year. Please email your requests to In your request, include the name of the event; event date; event time; set-up/take-down time needed; estimated attendance; and contact person name, email address, and phone number. Please note that by emailing Conference Services you are only requesting the space. Once your request has been processed, you will receive an email that includes information regarding the availability of the space (a “hold email") and instructions on how to confirm your reservation. Summer Reservations for Camp Casey

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey. The dates of stay available are June 13–September 26, 2011. Reservation requests are due by April 5. The summer requests are based on years of service to SPU and past summer stays at Casey. We rank employees by their years of service, which is provided by Human Resources. Once the ranking is developed, the past summer stay history is cross checked. If you have stayed at Casey during the summer, with a summer reservation request fulfilled, your ranking is replaced with the years it has been since your stay at Casey. Confused? Hire a SPRINT Team for Your Spring Cleaning Project

This summer, SPRINT will send 11 teams to learn and serve in 10 countries around the world. You can support the teams' fundraising efforts by hiring a team to help with landscaping, housecleaning, or other work projects around your house. We suggest a donation of $10 per hour per student. Funds go directly to students' trip accounts. Projects can be scheduled any time before graduation. Prayer Hotline Looking for Volunteers

Our Prayer is an international prayer hotline, and SPU is privileged enough to recruit volunteers. Volunteers give up one hour of their time a week, call into the hotline, and pray for people over the phone. The volunteers are not praying constantly throughout the hour. A person gets between three to six calls an hour. The volunteers are able to pray via their cell phone, or the Our Prayer office phone. Whatever phone they do choose to use, they will not be charged for the minutes that are used during their hour of volunteer time. Woodward Presents Paper

On the occasion of the centennial of the Port of Seattle, Professor of History Bill Woodward presented a paper titled “Protecting Washington's Waters: The Coast Forts" at the Pacific Historians Guild annual conference on March 5. “Pacific Waterways" was the conference theme; Bill's presentation integrated national and local perspectives in the 19th century. On January 22, he gave a talk based on this research at the Dupont branch of the Tacoma Public Library, under the auspices of the Humanities Washington speaker's bureau.

Pope-Levison Receives Grant, Presents Paper

Priscilla Pope-Levison, professor of theology, was awarded a $40,000 “Sabbatical Grant for Researchers" from the Louisville Institute. Also, her article "Methodist Interracial Cooperation in the Progressive Era: Amanda Berry Smith and Emma Ray" was published in Methodist History 49.2 (January 2011): 68-85. At the recent Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation 2011 Biennial Black History Conference in Seattle, she presented a paper on Emma Ray titled "Kansas City to Seattle: Emma Ray's Racial Uplift and Interracial Cooperation." A special note: the photo that sparked her interest in Emma Ray, a Free Methodist conference evangelist with connections to SPU, is housed in the First Free Methodist Church archives.

VanZanten's New Book

A new book by Susan VanZanten titled Joining the Mission: A Guide for (Mainly) New College Faculty, has recently been published by Eerdmans. Susan is professor of English and former director of the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development. A comprehensive guide for new (and experienced) faculty at mission-driven institutions, the book is based upon Susan's eight years of work in SPU's New Faculty Seminar. An orientation to the world of Christian higher education, the book covers a wide range of topics, including the history of higher education, multiple paradigms for faith and learning, the vocation of the college professor, designing a syllabus, working with faculty committees, and leading a balanced life.

Ferreiro's Article Published

An article by Professor European History Alberto Ferreiro titled “Martin von Braga" appears in the Reallexikon fur Antike und Christentum 24 (2010) 275-287, published by the Franz-Dolger Institut in Bonn, Germany. Articles are requested of authors by invitation only and are expected to propose novel insights. Martin of Braga was a sixth century missionary from the eastern Mediterranean who converted the peoples of Northwestern Spain (Galicia) permanently to Christianity.

Erisman Serves on Panel

Al Erisman, executive-in-residence in the School of Business and Economics, participated in a panel discussing technology and faith during a private retreat at Laity Lodge in Texas, March 10-13. Speakers include Albert Borgmann, Andy Crouch, Arthur Paul Boers, David Wood, and Eugene Peterson.

Overstreet Publishes Feast; Third Place Books Hosts Launch Party

University Communications specialist Jeffrey Overstreet's new novel The Ale Boy's Feast completes his four-book fantasy series called “The Auralia Thread." Evangelical Outpost has just published a review. There will be a book-launch party on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. at Third Place Books (Lake Forest Park). Jeffrey will discuss and sign copies of all four books. Also, Jeff just returned from the International Arts Movement conference, IAM Encounter 11, in New York City, where he spoke on the redemptive power of play, and gave a reading of his new book at a book-launch party there. (By special arrangement with the publisher, his new book was sold there two weeks early.) Jeffrey also gave lectures in Pittsburgh at February's Jubilee Conference, addressing approximately 2,000 college students on subjects such as film interpretation and fairy tales.
