Faculty, Staff Invited to CBTE Conference Events May 10

On May 10, the SPU community is invited to attend most of the events of the one-day Center for Biblical and Theological Education conference, “Embracing the (W)hole Gospel: Putting Faith Into Action." The conference features Richard Stearns and Steve Haas of World Vision. These free events include chapel (9:30–10:20 a.m.), breakout sessions (1:45–2:45 p.m. and 3–4 p.m.), a panel/roundtable discussion (4:15–5:30 p.m.), and the plenary lecture (7–8:30 p.m.). Schoenhals Symposium With Dr. Deforia Lane

This re-scheduled event will be held Thursday, May 12, with nationally recognized music therapist Dr. Deforia Lane. As the Lawrence and Ruth Schoenhals Fine Arts Symposium guest lecturer, Dr. Lane will offer two presentations: "Music, Faith, and Healing," 1 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150, and "Music & Medicine," 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Center, First Free Methodist Church. Dr. Lane is a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society, the associate director of the Seidman Cancer Center, director of music therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Seldman Cancer Center, and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. She was also the featured speaker at the "Music and the Brain" series at the Library of Congress in March. Her book, Music & Medicine: Deforia Lane's Life of Music, Healing, and Faith is a testimonial to her Christian faith and art of healing. Both events are free and open to the public.

Thursday Food for Thought: Brian Bantum

Bring a brown-bag lunch and join “Thursday Food for Thought" in the reading room at the SPU library. Enjoy lunch with SPU faculty and staff authors as they discuss their latest books on Thursdays,12:30-1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time follows, and copies will be available for purchase. On May 12, Assistant Professor of Theology Brian Bantum will read excerpts from his newest book, Redeeming Mulatto. Professors Respond to the Book, Love Wins by Rob Bell

Three theology faculty members will discuss The New York Times bestseller, Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived, on Tuesday, May 17, at 1 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The book by Pastor Rob Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith—the afterlife—asking the question, “would a loving God send people to eternal torment forever?" Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo, Instructor of Biblical Studies Nijay Gupta, and Assistant Professor of Theology Michael Langford will talk about Bell's book. Join a Bike-to-Work-Month Team!

May is Bike-to-Work month! Last year, four SPU teams rode 4,162 miles of the 1,061,718 miles that were logged by the more than 10,000 cyclists in the Group Health Commute Challenge. This year, SPU is rolling again. At present, the teams are the SPU Sharrows (captained by Jobe Korb-Nice), the SPU Psychlers (captained by Lynette Bikos,, and the SPU SCI-clers (captained by Janet Bester-Meredith, Essentially, we create teams of 4-10 people who will ride (and log into the system) as many miles as possible to and from work (recreation miles don't count). The event requires that people commit to riding a minimum of four days (representing one day of each week of the month). We also try to be a little competitive, watching our rankings with other SPU teams and with friends we might have in other organizations around town. While the Sharrows team is full, the SCI-clers could use eight more people, and the Psychlers could use two more people. Now at the Art Center Gallery: Annual “Senior Studio" Shows

The latest artwork by SPU students is now on display at SPU's Art Center Gallery. The annual “Senior Studio" shows features oil paintings, illustrations, photographs, mobile sculptures, and interactive installations. The students, all seniors, are majoring in illustrations/new pictures and studio art. Admission is free, and the gallery is wheelchair accessible. “Reconciled" A Gospel Oratorio" on May 22

SPU's Wind Symphony and Gospel Choir will perform together at “Reconciled: A Gospel Oratorio" on Sunday, May 22, at 7 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The concert will be directed by SPU faculty members Gerry Marsh and Stephen Newby. Gerry is the director of music technology, director of the Wind Symphony, and is part of the music composition faculty. He was a finalist for the Arlin G. Meyer Prize for “Reconciled." In 1998, he was inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame. Stephen is the director of University Ministries and the Center for Worship, director of the Gospel Choir, and associate professor of music. Admission is free and open to the public.

Autumn Registration Approaching

Registration for Autumn 2011 Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to their appointment time in order to remove the "Faculty Advisor Hold." Autumn registration for currently admitted undergraduate students begins Monday, May 16. Autumn registration for graduate students begins Monday, May 23. Looking for Outstanding Graduates

University Communications needs help identifying outstanding students from this year's graduating class. This request is for undergraduate and graduate students. These students and their achievements will be pitched to media outlets prior to Commencement. Please send the name(s) of the students and a short description about why you are recommending them. Examples would be students who overcame obstacles to graduate, are involved in community service projects, participated in innovative research, started a new venture, took a class that changed their career direction, or did something really interesting. Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference May 13

The ninth annual Erickson Undergraduate Research Conference will be held Friday, May 13, 3–9 p.m. in Otto Miller Hall. You should have received your open enrollment packet through campus mail by May 2. Open enrollment runs May 1–31 this year. Once again, your benefit selections will be made through an online system. Clement, Hopkins, Neuhouser Receive Honors

At the recent President's Spring Forum, faculty and staff were honored for their many years of service to SPU. The Associated Students of Seattle Pacific named Professor of Sociology Kevin Neuhouser as “Professor of the Year." The Oral V. Hembry Non-Exempt Staff Person of the Year Award was given to Finance Office Payroll Lead Carol Clement, and the Exempt Staff Person of the Year Award went to Assistant Director of Residence Life Leigh Hopkins. Additionally, 30-Years of Service recipients honored were Bob James, Building Maintenance, Marj Johnson, vice president of administration and university relations; and Tom Trzyna, professor of English; and Michael Ziemann, associate professor European Studies. Mirian Adeney, associate professor of global ministries, was honored for 35 years of service. Also honored were faculty and staff who have served at SPU for five, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years.

Okun to Participate in CMS Conference

Matthew Okun, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, recently had his proposal accepted for the 54th national conference of the College Music Society (CMS) in Richmond, Virginia, October 20–23, 2011. He will give a presentation titled “Diversity and Social Justice for Music Educators." Mathew has presented frequently at CMS regional conferences, co-hosted the CMS Northwest regional conference at SPU in April 2010, and was a session chair at the 2010 CMS national conference in Portland, Oregon.

VanZanten's Essay Published

Yost, Students Make Presentations at Conference

Paul Yost, professor of I/O psychology, presented three papers at the Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology's annual conference. Presentations included "Leadership Lessons of Experience," "HR Interventions That Go Viral," and "Making On-the-job Development a Foundational Pillar in an Organization's Talent Management System." Three doctoral students — Jillian McLellan, Chris Roenicke, and Glenna Chang — co-presented and co-authored two of the papers.

Davis' Article Published

Reed Davis, professor of political science, is pleased to announce the publication of his article "A Once and Future Greatness: Raymond Aron, Charles DeGaulle, and the Politics of Grandeur" in the current issue of International History Review.


Professors, Students Featured on KING-TV

To introduce the new “Community Kitchen at SPU," Assistant Professor of Nutrition Daniela Geleva and juniors Gina Ogazi and Heidi Laabs-Johnson were featured on the morning show “New Day Northwest" on KING-TV (Channel 5) on March 2.
