Learn about the speakers for the 2014 Commencement and Downtown Business Breakfast. As always, your feedback is needed on the Strategic Plan.

2014 Commencement Speaker
I am pleased to announce we will be blessed to have Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, serve as our Commencement speaker. Edelman has been an advocate for disadvantaged Americans her entire professional life. A graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, Edelman was the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, and directed the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund office in Jackson, Mississippi.

She has received more than 100 honorary degrees and many awards, including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award, a MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship, the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian award), and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award. Her writings include Families in Peril: An Agenda for Social Change; The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children and Yours; Lanterns: A Memoir of Mentors; I'm Your Child, God: Prayers for Our Children; I Can Make a Difference: A Treasury to Inspire Our Children; and The Sea Is So Wide and My Boat Is So Small: Charting a Course for the Next Generation.

Please note: There is currently a task force studying the potential for a separate Graduate Commencement ceremony. Provost Van Duzer will be providing more information on this soon, including the likelihood of securing a second Commencement speaker for the Graduate Ceremony.

2014 Downtown Business Breakfast Speaker
I want to thank the planning committee for their work and effort on this event, including the exploration of potential speakers. The 2014 Downtown Business Breakfast will be held Friday, April 25.

I believe this year's speaker has a wealth of experience and insight that will promote healthy discourse across campus and challenge our thoughts and positions as we consider how best SPU can fulfill its mission and advance our vision in this world.

I am pleased to announce this year's speaker will be Bill Moyers. He is an American journalist and public commentator. He served as White House press secretary in the Johnson administration from 1965 to 1967. He also worked as a network TV news commentator for ten years.

His TV work has included "Bill Moyers Journal," "The Power of Myth," "Frontline," "Now on PBS," "NBC Nightly News," "Healing and the Mind With Bill Moyers," "Wide Angle: A Walk Through the 20th Century With Bill Moyers," "On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying," "Facing the Truth With Bill Moyers," "Bill Moyers' World of Ideas," "The Public Mind: Our Times With Bill Moyers," and "Insight."

He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Peabody Award, Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Informational Series, TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in News and Information, Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement - Informational Programming, Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcast Journalism, WGA Award for Best News - Analysis, Feature, or Commentary – Television.

His books include The Power of Myth, Healing and the Mind, Welcome to Doomsday, and Moyers on Democracy.

Strategic Planning
We have reached the last goal statement and this portion of our planning process. I continue to have great "Coffee Conversations" and focus groups on these same topics, and I have really appreciated the way the campus community has engaged and offered insight and ideas. The strategic plan and our future will be better and more impactful because of it.

Also, I want to let the campus know that our ASSP President Isaac Gundersen has been leading a group of students in a conversation, offering their thoughts and perspectives every week on the questions posed in these emails. I really appreciate hearing from them – they are bright, creative, and hope-filled thinkers!

Here is the goal and questions for this week:

Goal 5: Operational Effectiveness and Efficiency
1. Refine and define metrics to drive improvement in student learning and to prepare alumni who will reflect the university's value, be shaped by its mission, and embody its vision and commitment to global and cultural engagement, reconciliation, and human flourishing.
2. Conduct a university-wide review to assess and improve effectiveness and efficiency of services, practices, processes, and programs to ensure alignment with best-practices and responsible and appropriately prioritized stewardship.
3. To be developed through further campus engagement and conversation this fall.

N.T. Wright Public Lecture on November 13

The Rev. Dr. N.T. Wright, one of the world's leading Bible scholars, comes to campus on Wednesday, November 13, at 7 p.m. in Brougham Pavilion. He will talk about his newest book, The Case for the Psalms: Why They Are Essential, and make an argument for why Christians must "read, pray, sing, and live the Psalms." The lecture is free and open to the public. Please invite family and friends to this special event. Be sure to arrive early. (Doors open at 6 p.m.) The event is sponsored by The Center for Biblical and Theological Education.

Screening of Documentary "Closure"

On Thursday, November 7, join the John Perkins Center and Response magazine as they host "Closure: A Documentary About Adoption." The film features Angela Burt Tucker '08, disability support services coordinator in the Center for Learning, and the search for her birth family. Watch her two-year journey unfold from Bellingham, Washington, to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Angela and husband, filmmaker Bryan Tucker '08, will join a conversation after the film. Veterans Day Forum on November 8

SPU's annual Veterans Day Forum will be Friday, November 8, 12:30-1:20 p.m. in Eaton Hall 112. Come and hear a panel of SPU student veterans and military personnel share their stories of service. This is a time to recognize the sacrifice that veterans have made on behalf of our nation. All are welcome to attend, and this event is open to the public.

Art Department Hosts Visiting Artist

The Art Department is hosting visiting artist Kevin Hamilton for a series of events to work with students and present his artistic practice to the public. He is a highly skilled artist and scholar with wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests that fit perfectly with SPU's liberal arts mission. His visit is funded through a generous grant from the Robert B. McMillen Foundation.

Kevin will examine the role of artists, not just as object-makers or performers, but as knowledge-producers, during a special lecture on Wednesday, November 6, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall. The lecture will explore the artist as a researcher, and draw from examples of Kevin's own work as well as from exhibitions from around the world. Kevin is an associate professor of new media and painting in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois. His recent work has included research and production on cybernetics, race, and the role of film in America. The event is free and open to the public. Learn more online. More

"Business as a Calling Day"

Sonny Vu is this year's keynote speaker for the School of Business and Economics' annual "Business as a Calling Day" event on Thursday, November 7. The founder, chairman, and CEO of Misfit Wearables will share lessons learned and inspiration from his experience in a high-tech, multinational startup that manufactures unique fitness-tracking devices. Faculty and staff are invited to any of the day's events. More

"Creative Conversations" With Ben McFarland

Associate Professor of Biochemistry Ben McFarland talks about how water's chemistry plays a role in the theories of the origin of life at the next "Creative Conversations" on Thursday, November 7, 3-3:40 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. The Quickening: How Chemistry Shaped Biology is Ben's book project, which will tell the story of how the familiar columns of the periodic table of elements constrained and guided the development of life. The story will show how the chemical "personalities" of elements organized evolution into a good and viable creation. Ben will read a short article he is working on about how the chemistry of water leads to its life-giving properties, playing a role in chemical theories of the origin of life -- and, therefore, how water carries God's creative grace. Service of Worship, Prayer for SPU Community

The Associated Students of Seattle Pacific (ASSP) and Relinquish prayer ministry invite faculty and staff to “Autumn Vigil," a service of worship and prayer for the SPU community on Thursday, November 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Weter Lounge. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome. Feel free to drop by any time during the service. There will be worship, prayer stations, and ways to respond though writing and art. There will also be opportunity to receive prayer and leave prayer requests for yourself and your office or department. The vigil will close with a prayer walk around campus at 3 p.m.

Autumn Choral Concert November 7

SPU's Men's Choir, Women's Choir, Chamber Singers, and Concert Choir will present a concert on Thursday, November 7, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. The first choral concert of the academic year will feature a variety of accompanied and unaccompanied pieces, and will feature the debut of Beth Ann Bonnecroy, the new Women's Choir director. This concert is free and open to the public.

Presenting and Preserving Your Scholarship With Digital Commons

Learn about self-archiving and how Digital Commons @ SPU can help you present and preserve your scholarship. The workshop is Wednesday, November 13, 12-1 p.m. in the Library Classroom on the main floor, and lunch will be provided. Register online by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 12. SFS Closed on November 8

Student Financial Services (SFS) will be closed on Friday, November 8, in order for the SFS staff to hold their annual all-day office-planning retreat. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, November 12, after the Veterans Day holiday.

Faculty, Staff Invited to Latreia Service Day

Join Latreia for their quarterly service day that brings together students, faculty, and staff to serve around the community at several different places. It is an ideal opportunity to get off campus and get involved in different organizations and sites, such as homeless shelters, environmental organizations, or food banks. Faculty and staff can either sign up for a service day, or let your students know about the dates. The first one is Saturday, November 16. Learn more online. More

Faculty, Staff Invited to Edcamp

Edcamp Seattle is a free professional development opportunity for teachers, provided by teachers. Arrive with an idea for a session that you would like to lead, and come with the anticipation of a full day of learning. A session might explore a technology tool, a discussion about best practices, or a collaborative presentation with multiple facilitators. The day will begin with time to meet other teachers over coffee. There will be an empty session board where you and all attendees can post session titles. Over the course of the day, you will have the opportunity to attend up to three sessions. The rule of this "unconference" is to "vote with your feet." If a session doesn't meet your needs, simply get up and move on to another room. You will learn something new, maybe make a new friend, and receive information that you can immediately apply in your classroom and professional life. Flu Shots at Local Pharmacies

Getting your flu (or other preventive care immunization) at your local pharmacy? Pharmacies need to bill your Cigna medical benefit to receive 100 percent coverage from either Cigna plan, with no out-of-pocket cost to you. Vaccines can be administered at a variety of pharmacies. (Select the link below to see the top six pharmacies in this area.) You will need to present your Cigna medical ID card at the pharmacy. We have found that some pharmacies have been in error trying to run these vaccines through the pharmacy benefit. Feel free to print this flyer to take with you (select the link below), as it may cut down on instances where the pharmacy bills the pharmacy benefit (rather than our medical benefit). You should receive your flu vaccines at no cost to you. If you are having difficulty, you may need to visit another pharmacy in order to get your shot properly billed straightaway. A pharmacy not able to bill the correct medical plan will receive additional instructions from Cigna if you provide Human Resources with the name, location, and phone number of the pharmacy. More

Enjoy Pumpkin Pie and Support Summer SPRINT Teams

This summer, SPRINT will send eight student-led teams to learn and serve alongside local Christian leaders around the globe. Support the summer SPRINT teams by purchasing 12-inch pumpkin pies for $10 each. To order, email student Daniel Lee at with the number of pies desired and your on-campus delivery location. Encourage Your Students to Participate in SVPC

Please encourage your students to enter the annual Social Venture Plan Competition (SVPC), in which teams from all different majors work together and learn from each other as they devise sustainable businesses to meet real needs. It's all about competition, innovation, and creating social benefit – not to mention a record-breaking $9,000 in prize money this year! (The SVPC Showcase is scheduled for April 2014.) Winter, Spring Reservations at Camp Casey Due November 5

Winter and spring reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates of stay are January 6, 2014, through June 16, 2014. Reservation requests are due by November 5, 2013. The winter/spring requests are selected by lottery and are not affected by summer stays at Casey. Due to the Veterans Day holiday, the next Bulletin will be published Tuesday, November 12.


Lee Teaches Seminar

Professor of Clothing and Textiles Jaeil Lee recently taught a one-month seminar titled "Curriculum Development of Technical Design and Product Development" under the auspices of the Fashion and Technology Center at Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea. Jaeil reports on the seminar. "Although ‘technical design' are buzz words in clothing and textiles academia and the fashion industry in Korea, there was lack of information about it. As an ex-technical designer in the industry and author of a textbook on the subject, I offered the seminar with an intention to provide a clear understanding about what technical design is, and to support higher education professors in developing a curriculum about the subject. The seminar was held Saturdays during September. The participants were clothing and textiles professors and industry professionals in Korea. I am excited that it was well received."

Hamilton Presents at Conference

Chair of the History Department Michael Hamilton presented a paper at the national conference "The Worlds of Billy Graham" in Wheaton, Illinois, September 26-28. His talk was titled "From Desire to Decision: The Evangelistic Preaching of Billy Graham." The conference was part of a two-year, multi-scholar project funded by the Lilly Endowment that examines the impact of the life, career, and ministry of the famous American evangelist. Hess' Chapter Published

A book chapter written by Professor of Finance Dan Hess was published in August. "A Framework for CSR Assessment, Measurement and Reporting" is a chapter in the book Christian Ethics and Corporate Culture: A Critical View on Corporate Responsibilities. The editor was B. Okonkwo, and the book was published by Springer Publishing in New York.

Stewart Gives Presentation, Article Published

Professor of Accounting Ross Stewart gave a presentation in August at the annual meeting of the American Accounting Association in Anaheim, California. He co-presented with Jill Hooks from Massey University. The presentation was titled "The Changing Role of Accounting: From Consumers to Shareholders." Also, an article by Ross was just published in Business and Society Review. The article was titled "What Proponents of CSR Need to Know About Accounting: Drawing on Weber and Aristotle to Rethink Generally Accepted Accounting Principles" (with B. Dyck, J. Morrill, and N. Christie). Co-author Nancy Christie used to be on the School of Business and Economics (SBE) faculty, and Bruno Dyck has been a visiting scholar in SBE.

Wall-Scheffler's Research in Los Angeles Times, Other Outlets

A new research study by Associate Professor of Biology Cara Wall-Scheffler has appeared in more than 200 media outlets around the world. The study shows how the status of a relationship influences the walking speeds of men and women. Results of the study appeared in The Los Angeles Times, CBS News, Time magazine, and many others.
