Host Families Needed

The American Homestay Network (AHN) is looking for families to temporarily host international students visiting SPU. Forty Japanese and Chinese students will be visiting during January and February for 3-5 weeks. The students are often in their final years of high school (ages 15-18), and are considering attending college in the United States upon graduation. AHN will pay a hosting fee and provide online training and orientation, a 24-hour professionally staffed hotline, interpreter services, and many other amenities. SFS Closing Early December 17

Student Financial Services will close at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, for their annual Christmas lunch off campus, and will remain closed for the remainder of the day. The office will return to normal operations on Wednesday, December 18.

Study John With Us This Winter

SPU faculty and staff are invited to the 2014 Winter Community Bible Study on Wednesday nights beginning January 8. The study will be taught by Assistant Professor of New Testament Laura Sweat. Each week's class will consist of lecture, contemplative reflection, and intergenerational small groups focused on application of the text. For more information and to sign up, visit the website. The quickest way to learn whether SPU is closed or running late due to inclement weather is to call the Emergency Closure Hotline at 206-281-2800. The phone line will be updated before 6 a.m. Information on evening classes, events, and athletic games will also be updated.

Alsbury's Chapter Published

A chapter co-authored by Professor of Educational Leadership Thomas Alsbury was recently published in Transforming Teacher's Work Globally: In Search of a Better Way for Teachers and Their Communities. The chapter, co-authored with K.T. Jackson, is titled “Cultural Transformation in an American School: Teacher Response to Reform From a Finnish Community in the U.S. [pp. 149-174], edited by E. Kimonen, and R. Nevalainen.

Snow covers Peterson Hall and a partially complete Moyer Hall in this photo from the winter of 1953-54. Moyer is the oldest continuously operating dormitory on the SPU campus; it was completed in July of 1954. More
