Special Evening of Music

Soprano and Assistant Professor of Music Cherie Hughes along with guitarist Roberto Limón will present a special evening of music on Wednesday, March 26, 7:30 p.m. at the Jack Straw Cultural Center in the University District. The duo will discuss and perform music from their recording project as part of the Jack Straw Artist in Residence program. The project includes nine Sephardic songs by Catalonian composer Matilde Salvador, and the premiere of a new work set to the poetry of Holocaust survivor Henriette Asseo and written for them by New York-based Mexican composer Samuel Zyman.

Hughes has performed throughout the United States and Mexico and is a frequent collaborator with Limón, a member of the Mexican government's Grupos Artísticos de Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. Hire a SPRINTer for Your Spring Cleaning Project

This summer, the John Perkins Center's SPRINT program will send eight student teams to learn and serve alongside local leaders around the globe. Response Magazine Looking for Story Ideas

Following the visit of Madeleine Albright to the Downtown Business Breakfast and to SPU's campus, Response magazine will highlight stories of people who paved the way for others through their work, discoveries, and ideas. Stories could highlight faculty research discoveries, alumni who have been trailblazers in their careers, first-generation college students, and reflections on historical trailblazers. Brownbag Lunch to Learn About Sitecore, Contribute

Do you have technical questions or need a refresher on how to use Sitecore or Contribute to update your department's website? Come to the brownbag lunch and get your questions answered. Learn More About Your Numbers and Get $100

Do you know your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, pulse, and Body Mass Index? Are you covered by one of SPU's medical plans? If you don't know these numbers and missed the onsite screenings last week, you can schedule an appointment with your own doctor to get the same information. Your doctor will need to provide your results to Summit Health via a special fax by March 31, 2014. The form can be found on the Human Resources website under “SPU Wellness Program." You must fast at least eight hours before your test, having only water, black coffee, or medications. As with prior years, you will also need to complete an online health assessment for the $100 incentive. Information on access and dates of that assessment will be forthcoming. Koskela's Article Published

An article by Associate Professor of Theology Doug Koskela was published in the latest issue of the Wesleyan Theological Journal. The piece is titled “Holiness and Catholicity: A Fruitful Tension for the Wesleyan Tradition." The journal is a publication of the Wesleyan Theological Society, which Doug will serve as first vice president during the next year.

Lemcio Invited Panelist About Crimea

In mid-January, Professor Emeritus of New Testament Gene Lemcio was an invited guest panelist at the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies regarding the protests at the Euromaidan in Kyiv, Ukraine. In early March, the Russian Student Association at the University of Washington invited him to be a guest panelist discussing the recent events in Crimea.

SOE Faculty Members Facilitate Workshop

David Wicks and Andrew Lumpe, faculty members in the School of Education, along with doctoral student Daihong Chen and Janiess Sallee from Valley Christian School, facilitated a workshop called "Blogging to Improve Student Achievement" at the annual conference of the Northwest Council for Computing in Education in Seattle on March 12.

Gritter's New Book

A new book co-authored by Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction Kris Gritter will be published this month. Can Pop Culture and Shakespeare Exist in the Same Classroom? Using Student Interest to Bring Complex Texts to Life is about how to scaffold literature discussions using students' prior knowledge of popular culture. The book is co-written with an English professor at Hope College and the secondary principal at Seattle Christian Schools. Learn more about the book. More


Former Adjunct Music Professor Neil Lieurance Dies

Former Adjunct Professor of Music Neil Lieurance died March 9. Neil taught at SPU from 2005 to 2012, directing the Women's Choir, teaching sight-singing and ear-training, and supervising music education student-teachers. He taught and conducted choral groups in the Shoreline School District for more than 40 years. Neil received a number of distinguished awards, including the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 1998, and the 2007 American Choral Directors Association Leadership and Service Award. He is remembered for his gentle demeanor, commitment to student learning and choral experience, and wonderful performances at SPU's annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concerts. His obituary appeared in The Seattle Times on March 16. More
