Faculty, Staff Advent Devotions Begin December 2

Advent devotions for faculty and staff begin Tuesday, December 2, from 8:30–9 a.m. in Alexander Hall Chapel. Each Tuesday (until December 23) devotions will be led by a different faculty member. The music will be led by Gerard Duguay, assistant director of computer and information systems, and Frank Kinard, manager of copying and mailing services. Hot spiced apple cider, coffee and muffins will be served afterward. Please join us to celebrate the coming of Christ.

Everyone's Invited to Tradition

Join SPU students as they celebrate Christmas with many favorite sounds and sights of the season. There will be food, crafts, live performances, animals and more! There will also be a “Santa Booth," where you can get your picture taken with Santa and his elves. Suggested donation is $1. The booth is hosted by the SPU Young Alumni Council. Tradition is Friday, December 5, from 7-10 p.m. in the Tiffany Loop. Parking will not available in the Tiffany Loop on December 5.

Seattle P-I Reporter of Sweatshop Slavery Series on Campus

Seattle P-I journalist Brad Wong and Microsoft employee Hai-Tri Le will be in the SUB Fireside Room on Wednesday, December 3, at 7 p.m. to talk about a recent special report on human trafficking and sweatshop slavery. Brad's five-part series for the Seattle P-I features 12 women who were relocated to the Seattle area from a garment factory in American Samoa. Instrumental in this rescue was local resident Hai-Tri Le, a 39-year-old Microsoft employee. With other volunteers, he orchestrated the resettlement of these modern slaves. The United States is now engaged in the largest human-trafficking case ever prosecuted in this country. Undergraduate Scholarship Reference Forms Due

Student Financial Services (SFS) Undergraduate Scholarship Reference Forms were due December 1 to give students enough time to return it to SFS by Friday, December 5. Please remember all application materials are due by 4:30 p.m. in SFS by Friday, December 5 (including the reference form). Papers Wanted for “Lord of the Rings" Festival

The Office of Student Programs and the Theology and Film Cadre are interested in papers or projects relating to the "Lord of the Rings" books and films. Entries will be displayed or presented during the "Lord of the Rings" Festival at SPU, January 15 and 17. The best submissions will be eligible to win five free tickets to a theater showing of the new “Lord of the Rings" movie, "Return of the King." The festival also includes free showings of the first two “Lord of the Ring" movies, as well as discussion groups and free movie snacks. Grades Dues by December 19

Autumn Quarter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the Web; in-person; placed in the SAS drop box (located outside of Demaray Hall 120); mailed; or faxed to (206) 281-2669 (with the original mailed or submitted as soon as possible). If you have any questions concerning grading or meeting the University deadline, contact Kelli Knapp at (206) 281-2636. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes, such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid and processing enrollment verifications.

More Christmas Presents for Sale in the SUB

L'Arche, a home for disabled adults, is selling their handiwork at SPU on December 2-3 in the SUB from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Homemade candles, journals and paper are among the crafts. These can make good Christmas presents. Come and support them!

Faculty Members in Local Production of “Messiah" This Week

Handel's great work “Messiah" will be performed Friday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 7, at 3 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers will perform under the direction of Maestro George Shangrow. The academic year on-call list is now available in Student Financial Services or by emailing the Office of Student Employment. The list is comprised of students who are interested in one-time or part-time employment. The list is divided into five categories: child care, tutoring, manual labor, office work and house cleaning. Eigenbrood Presents at International Conference

Rick Eigenbrood, associate professor of education, recently made a presentation at the International Conference on Civic Education Research. His presentation was titled "Inclusive School Communities: Fostering Caring, Understanding and Kindness in Youth." The paper reviewed current research on possible altruistic outcomes for youth who engage in interactions with students with disabilities.

Wall's Paper on “Staying Saved"

Rob Wall, professor of Christian Scriptures, delivered a paper titled "A Theology of Staying Saved" at the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Atlanta, Georgia. In his paper, Rob contends that James 2:22 performs an important role within the final literary form of the New Testament. The verse serves as a model for relating the Pauline and Catholic collections of letters together as complement parts of an integral whole. Sellers Appointed to Healthcare Advisory Board

Tina Schermer Sellers, director of the medical family therapy program, was recently appointed to the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association National Advisory Board. The other board member representing the West Coast is Larry Mauksch, associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine Residency at the University of Washington. Board members work on the training and development of integrated collaborative health care designs.

SPU Faculty, Staff and Students Compete in the Seattle Marathon

Professor of History Bill Woodward, Finance Office Administrative Assistant and Controller Kari Husby, and News and Media Relations Manager Tracy Cooper were among the many SPU community members participating in the Seattle Marathon. Bill, Kari and Tracy all competed in the Seattle Half Marathon. Several SPU students were later spotted wearing the “coveted" orange shirt from this year's race. Way to go, runners!
